The elusive sixth sense, something few possess and is a special oddity, which no one actually knows much about. There is a similar element found locked away inside a game, good graphics, sound, gameplay and such like all make a game theoretically good but for the game to top the sales charts, to be the best it needs an elusive element, this element goes by the name of magic.

After playing Excite bike I went away feeling somewhat disappointed, the sounds were good, the gameplay was addictive and the graphics were lush but... there was no magic, no spark to set my gaming world alight GT3 and Turok is similar!

I can name a few games that feature this elusive element Conker's Bad Fur Day being one of the most recent ones, utter gaming magic and the most moving ending I have seen to a game ever. Zelda's all of them go without saying, Mario is very similar. Then there is Perfect Dark, No Mercy, Goldeneye, Shadowman and so many more... These games had that spark that magic. When can I expect to see it again???

Paper Mario looks a promising bet, it seems like one of these special magical games, the Zelda twins will also likely feature this wonderful experience and then there is Pokemon Crystal as well! Who helps bring the magic??? Nintendo do have a special ability to create it a lot especially Shigeru Miyamoto, no one has managed to match the amazement that is Zelda nor has any Platformer toppled the dated Mario 64!!! He can't be beaten and with I do believe Pikmin will continue to feature the same magical feel.

Satoshi Tajiri (sorry) the Pokemon creator, what a guy he has created one of the greatest gaming experiences of my entire life!!! Do any of you remember playing Pokemon Red/Blue for the first time? Utter astonishment. The fabled Nintendo Magic appears a lot and is why I continue to pursue the Nintendo franchise.

But what about the future? Will developers finally manage to create this magic? Or is it a specialty only few of the world renown developers posses, whatever it maybe if hope to play more and more games that isn't just addictive, good looking and sounding amazing but also has a sprinkle of fairy dust on top.

You silly Dragon!

We didn't mean that Rare get out the magic wand and say "Abra Kadabra" in order to make the game special.

It's a way of describing how a game grips you and makes you think that it's the best game ever.

Most decent games have you thinking that way for the first half hour, possibly the first few days but trully magical games give you that feeling for months.

Ant has certainly been spellbound by Metal Gear Solid's magic...

Paul Daniels had magic though, and when did you see him pull out a pad and say "That's Magic!"?

To call it magic show ignorance, people used to say the sun was some kind of magic, and it revolved around the Earth.

There's no magic in games, just a number of different ingredients.

All sorts of things can help to make a game special, a little innovation, a story that captures you, playability that keeps you coming back for just one more go.

Some developers know how to capture the imagination better than others, that's all.

No Mercy and Perfect Dark didnt really have any magic.

They were good but not original enough to be magical.
They were simply old experiences rehashed.

Magic comes through originality, cleverness, good design, wonder graphics and gameplay, super music...

It's a game where nearly everything is Perfect.

Having said this, Jet Force Gemini had almost all of these qualities but still wasn't quite magical.

I think that there is one last element to it.

Surprise.

Hype ruins it really. Whatever magazine you read, the over exadurated descriptions always send my imagination the too far, so sometimes a games just disappoints becuase you built up a false image from your dreams and mis interpretations.

Goldeneye and Zelda hit me out of the blue.
As did Pokemon and Conker.

These games impressed me and surprised me in a way I never saw coming.

I'm sure that that is where the magic comes from.

Developers become world renowned by making their games great so it stands to reason that world renowned developers are capable of this kind of "magic". There's a lot of magic available on the PC, so many good games. Even first time developers can get it right, like when they did Giants. Everyone should buy Giants, even if they have it already. There just aren't enough Mecc levels and Kabuto is pretty dull really, but the story is great and the Mecc levels there are are superb and then there's the Sea Reaper levels which are good fun too.

The "magic" in any creative work of fiction stems from the creator's soul. Unless the main creator/producer of a game infuses his enthusiasm, energy, obsession, and "SOUL" into the project, it will simply have no magic, no matter how technically good the final product is.
