We are getting "Vice City" instead :P

(taken from IGN)

"July 15, 2003 - Sources report that Rockstar's mega-money maker Grand Theft Auto: Vice City will be coming to the Xbox, possibly as soon as this holiday season.
As many insiders know, the Grand Theft Auto series is supposed to be PlayStation 2 console exclusive, however sources reveal that Rockstar is circumventing the agreement by stripping the Xbox version of the title Grand Theft Auto, and simply repackaging the game as Vice City.

Back in May, Take Two's CEO Jeffrey Lapin spoke about a major Rockstar title in development for the Xbox during the company's quarterly conference call with analysts. "We said that there will be an Xbox SKU from Rockstar in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2004 [Nov. to Jan.]," Lapin said, "but we're not going to comment on what it is at this point." It now looks like Vice City is that game.

Vice City's gameplay will be identical to the PC version that recently shipped, and might also include additional features like custom soundtracks and downloadable content."

Clever stuff.

Not if they don't bother with it. Metal Gear Solid 2 didn't improve on the PS2 version with the release of Substance. It looked better for me because I didn't have an advanced scart when I had my PS2 but apart from that there was nothing to get excited about.

If they just do a direct port then they can kiss good bye to any remote interest I have in the game. Custom Sound Tracks, Solid DD Soundtrack, LIVE content, Updated graphics engine, clipping issues sorted, decent aiming system etc are just the raw basics I will expect. Otherwise they can peece off.

Having only played the game on PC for the first time yesterday I have to say that it's very impressive, certainly ramping up the graphics settings and resolution to max makes for a very pretty picture. I like it, and it's good it's coming to Xbox in some form, look at it this way - it's bound to look nicer than the PS2 version.

I reckon it'll be worth a purchase. Even if I just end up playing survival against the cops like I did on the demo of the first one.

Stuff the missions flamegrill the pigs again! :D

As much as I loved GTAIII on the PC, I have to agree with ÂLІÂÎR here. Unless Rockstar take advantage of the XBox hardware; add a custom soundtrack option, release downloadable content (if not tailor the game for Live play) and snazz up the graphics considerably, Vice City won't be anything too special now.
