Look, if you still think the Dreamcast is the best value console for your money, then think again!!

If you havenít heard of the PlayStation 2 before, then where have you been? The PlayStation 2 is an excellent games console, and is now available at the superb new price of just £199.99, which really means, if youíve wanted one, but couldnít afford it, go get one now! This may still seem a lot of money, and £200 is, but for the best 128bit games machine available (outside of Japan), combined with DVD and CD playback functions, the PS2 is now the best value entertainment system around.

Sony have had huge success in the past with the PlayStation, and theyíre well known for producing some of the greatest audio and visual electronic goods, but now they aim to dominate the gaming home console market for a second time, and this new price range will ensure even more sales and a very high consumer base, perhaps too high for Nintendo and X Box to unleash their new consoles against and conquer. If you donít know what youíd like this Christmas, may I suggest the PlayStation 2, disappointment, will not occur.

Situation: You want a games console with lots of extras and a wide selection of top quality games. You have money, an old PlayStation, like many people, and a range of PlayStation games that you donít really want to get rid of. Youíve seen a DVD or two at a friendís house and you noticed how much better the picture quality is than VHS. What do you do? Get a PS2; that would be a very wise decision.

It has a DVD player built in, saving space that a standalone chunky machine would take, you can play any region 2 DVD through it, and thereís even a DVD X disc available to buy separately if you wish to purchase multi region DVD, so thatís sorted. You can use the controller for a remote control, but it does get rather annoying, my advice would be to purchase the official Sony Remote control. Ignore the price - itís superb! You can also play CDs through the PS2 with incredible crystal clear sound, thanks to the DTS and Dolby Digital technology.

The graphics are superb in many games, with top titles including GT3 ñ if you want a great deal, get the PS2 + GT3 game in special box set, for just £20 more than the PS2 asking price! I would also recommend Extermination, a graphical feast of creepy and freaky zombie slashing, but with a samurai sword, if you liked resident evil, youíll love this. Fifa 2001 was criticised for itís change in gameplay, which actually led it to become more realistic, but Iíd advise holding out for Fifa 2002, or maybe ISS Pro Evolution 2, both games look set to change the everyday football simulation.

Red Faction, SSX (a top supreme snowboarding game), Moto GP, F1 2001, Crazy Taxi, Tekken tag, Resident Evil Code Veronica X, Star Wars Star fighter, Onimusha, Madden NFL 2001, Quake 3 Revolution, Zone of the Enders are the cream of the Sony PS2 crop, make sure you check them out. Future top titles are likely to include Tony Hawkís Pro Skater 3, Metal Gear Solid 2, Max Payne, WWF Smackdown 3, Silent Hill 2, the two aforementioned football games, and more. The PS2 gaming scene has really taken off, and itís fast becoming the home to some amazing and groundbreaking games.

More? You want more? Well, you can have more, if youíve become inseparable to your PlayStation games, then do not worry about selling your 32bit console, just sell that and keep the games ñ you can play them on the PS2!!! There wonít be any graphical advances, but the PlayStation 2 has backwards compatibility with the PlayStation games, which is a very nice inclusion. The control pads from the PlayStation will also work, as it happens the Dual Shock 2 pad is very similar to the original, keeping a sense of familiarity. Good plan Sony!

In the future there may be a hard drive for the PS2, allowing more advances, there may be a broadband modem, allowing you to connect to the Internet and play games online, so the future looks very bright indeed. 10/10. Get it now.

I know. I think November and December are the months to really look forward too, with the likes of Smackdown 3 and Jak and Daxter, there is going to be a heck of a battle for Christmas No.1.

I have bought Dave Mirris 2 and just received Operation Winback through the post as my Gameaday prize, and both are good games.

But to be honest, all of the brilliant games have been out for quite a while now, so people are now waiting for the next. I am not sure which AAA title is next.

Like buses...

At uni, at like 09:00 there is a huge queue by the bus station waiting to get to uni, (probably over two hundred people). After ten minutes wait, suddenly 2 double deckers, three orange buses and a taxi turn up all at once. Everyone in the queue gets a place. (I pity those that have to pay for a taxi!)

Anyway, the point is, the PS2 games are doing that at the mo. GT3 was the last big bus to come along, now there`s a huge queue. That`ll disappear though in a few months, when suddenly transport is no longer a problem with the release of the christmas games in one big rush!

Very true! Whilst it is still cheaper, I think the price to performance ratio is now in Sony`s favour.

If you havenít heard of the PlayStation 2 before, then

:-) I like that line!

Take Your Honour for example. As a fellow student, he thought the same as me. Its one of the consoles not both. Were it not for the price drop, he would have stuck with the Dreamcast.

This may still seem a

And inside Japan really. There is nothing better about the Gamecube really, apart from ease of developement. Each console does perhaps have slightly different advantages, i.e. one console is better than the other at a certain type of game, but overall its actually a very even fight.

combined with DVD and CD playback functions, the PS2 is now

With the only possible exception of Rubiks Cubes. For an excellent Rubiks cube game, check out www.bath.ac.uk/~py0tap to see what I mean. The creator is a fellow student studying Physics, and he`s a genius behind a computer (and in front)!

Sony have had huge success in

Many of us had discussed the fact that we own Sony TVs, Sony Hi-fis, Sony sound systems, etc... Its shocking when you look around the house.

Almost definitely too high! Digitiser, usually completely against anything PS2, actually admitted this weekend that perhaps the safest console to back these days was the PS2. Its teething problems were over, its selling like mad, and its got a bright future!

If you

It didn`t for most of us! (So far, touch wood)

I still mess around with Final Fantasy games, and Wipeout 2097!!

Youíve seen a DVD or two at a friendís house and you

Indeed!

It has a DVD player built in,

I regularly do this, and the picture is great. There were green problems and lip-sync issues, but all were dealt with!

and thereís even a DVD X disc available to buy
> separately if you wish to purchase multi region DVD, so thatís sorted.

I haven`t bothered with this, but I know many who have, that love the feature!

You can

I actually went for an unofficial remote, before the release of the latest one, but its still good. The sound, as you say, is also top notch!

The graphics are

Excellent stuff! Mine was £300, but I don`t regret it. At that price, what can go wrong!

I would also recommend Extermination, a graphical feast of creepy

ONIMUSHA? I think you may have meant Onimusha here, as Extermination is a little different I think.

Fifa 2001 was criticised for itís change in gameplay,

Pro Evo`ll tell you all about this :-)

Red Faction, SSX (a top supreme snowboarding

Some say the cream ain`t that sweet, but I love it totally, without doubt!!

make sure you check them out.

Jak and Daxter, Wipeout Fusion, Devil May Cry... the list is huge!

The PS2 gaming scene has really taken off, and itís

Covered this, and again, its undeniably true now!

More? You

There is texture smoothing, and an option to reduce loading times!

but the PlayStation 2 has backwards compatibility with the

I agree, its fine tuned, but similar. Its familiarity is underestimated. The addition of complete analog control on all buttons is also an excellent feature!

In the

Not sure how the online stuff will take off, but I agree it should be superb. If that works... nothing will stop Sony!
