Assignment 1
Assignment is due in on Thursday 18th October 2001
Binary Arithmetic
1. Convert the following numbers to binary using twos complement representation
9 -6 -99
2. Assuming 10 bits represent a binary number, with the first being a sign bit (twos
complement). Convert the following binary digits to decimal
000011101
001001011
110001111
3. Normalise the following numbers, which are held with a 10-bit mantissa and
6-bit exponent
0 000000110 000111
0 000010111 000110
1 111110111 000000
1 111111010 000011
4. the binary number 1010 1011 0111 can be represented in a number of different
ways
a. State its hexadecimal form
b. State its value in denary if it represents
(i) an unsigned binary digit
(ii) a twos complement floating point number with an eight bit mantissa
followed by a 4-bit exponent

That brings back memories!
I remeber when I first learnt how to alter the auto-correct function on Microsoft Word.....
Where people would type a word such as "the" and it would automatically change to "poo" or something similar!
Being at school, most of the people didnt have a clue what was happening, and were wondering why there words were changing without them typing!
(Arent I mean!)
:-) <----- Evil Smile!
I am completly computer literate thanks!
My problem is I know i want to go into an IT career, but doing what I dont know. I think computing would be my best bet really. I don't really know much about programming so I'd be really interested to find out about that.
I'm doing IT for GCSE at the moment (final year) I got an A* in my mocks and so far my cousework is at a similar level. It really annoys me that I spend half the lesson helping other people and as soon as I do something slightly advanced everyone wants to know how you do it.
If youre in that category, I suggest you take IT A-Level! :-D
Well I wouldnt do
> that for £1.50 an hour!
Neither would I.
But out of the subjects I took it is one of the best ones...
Some of it is hard to leran, and theory can get a bit boring, but making a program using a piece of code and getting it to work is quite rewarding!
We use this program called "Pascal" and at the moment we are doing basic stuff like asking the user to enter their name etc.!
Hopefully next year we will be making something worthwhile!

Well I wouldnt do that for £1.50 an hour!

Especially in a printing factory! :-P
Yeah I know I get payed for making tea and coffee and sitting on a computer smoking, what a terrible job I have.
