Mind you, everything feels like pain at the moment (I Walk Like A Cowboy, Life Sport and Football).

But some games just bring such nerve wracking moments, such heartbreak when we get so close only to miss out.

Championship Manager is one such game.

When I was managing West Bromich Albion, I soon dropped into the relegation zone. I won the odd game, but was always just one more win from safety.

I got fired, and it was gutting. Months in the game passed as I searched for another job, eventually I was offered one.

It was quite a step down from West Brom, in the English 1st Division, it was Brechin, in the Scottish 3rd division, a team with average gates of 800.

I was over the moon!

They only just had enough players to fill the bench, but there was a little money to dabble in the transfer market.

We had a great away record, and were rising the table. We got through the 2nd round of the Scottish Cup, and up to 2nd place, a promotion place in the league.

We were playing a premier league team in the cup, and were at 0-0 until the last 5 minutes, then my gaming world fell apart. We conceded a goal. We lost the next 3 league games. Now out of the cup, and slipping back down the table. Absolutely gutting. From up so high, to down so low. The board are concerned about the run of defeats, and I could soon be in for the chop again.

And it's not just this game that does it either.

In how many games have you reached the boss, and been humiliated by him? That I can cope with, it's when you think you're on top, and it all falls apart.

I remember facing M. Bison. Again and again he would defeat me, taking only a little damage in the process, then something amazing happened, I beat him in the first round perfect. He didn't hit me at all. My heart was beating faster, could this be the win I was after? In the second round I continued with the same tactic, taking his energy meter down, when I think that elusive win is but another combo away what should happen? He wises up to what I'm doing and gives me a good hiding. But hey, there's always round 3, right? But that never lasted, the moment was gone, and it was back to M. Bison dishing out the same old punishment you were used to. So near, and yet still as far away as ever.

And how about those old platformers, with the near impossible jumps? You'd make the run, and try to make that jump. If you were any less than at the very edge of the platform you'd fall to your death, or if you left the jump too late, you'd feebly tumble into the pit below. And yet we make that leap of faith again and again, heart in mouth as we wait to see if we'd made it.

But I guess that's the appeal of gaming, overcoming the difficulties, the challenges to be victorious. To win that cup, to make that jump, or to leave M. Bisom a bloody pulp on the mat, and to see that end sequence. I guess the more difficulty we face, the more we overcome, the more satisfying finally beating it is. That's why there will always be single player games, because as fun as multiplayer is, for me, nothing beats the achievement of beating the game!

It happens to me on Multiplayer.

You get psyched up, you're hot, on a roll, full energy, then you make one mistake and you lose your cool and the entire game falls to pieces.

It usually happens when you're doing something especially hard. Earning cheats on Goldeneye/Perfect Dark for example.

Still, there's always that great sense of achievement when you pull it off after the 50 billionth time.

M Bison was easy to defeat! I was 4 when I first completed Street Fighter! I always found Sagat and Vega the hardest, but I could still beat them quite easily!
