Mind you, everything feels like pain at the moment (I Walk Like A Cowboy, Life Sport and Football).

But some games just bring such nerve wracking moments, such heartbreak when we get so close only to miss out.

Championship Manager is one such game.

When I was managing West Bromich Albion, I soon dropped into the relegation zone. I won the odd game, but was always just one more win from safety.

I got fired, and it was gutting. Months in the game passed as I searched for another job, eventually I was offered one.

It was quite a step down from West Brom, in the English 1st Division, it was Brechin, in the Scottish 3rd division, a team with average gates of 800.

I was over the moon!

They only just had enough players to fill the bench, but there was a little money to dabble in the transfer market.

We had a great away record, and were rising the table. We got through the 2nd round of the Scottish Cup, and up to 2nd place, a promotion place in the league.

We were playing a premier league team in the cup, and were at 0-0 until the last 5 minutes, then my gaming world fell apart. We conceded a goal. We lost the next 3 league games. Now out of the cup, and slipping back down the table. Absolutely gutting. From up so high, to down so low. The board are concerned about the run of defeats, and I could soon be in for the chop again.

And it's not just this game that does it either.

In how many games have you reached the boss, and been humiliated by him? That I can cope with, it's when you think you're on top, and it all falls apart.

I remember facing M. Bison. Again and again he would defeat me, taking only a little damage in the process, then something amazing happened, I beat him in the first round perfect. He didn't hit me at all. My heart was beating faster, could this be the win I was after? In the second round I continued with the same tactic, taking his energy meter down, when I think that elusive win is but another combo away what should happen? He wises up to what I'm doing and gives me a good hiding. But hey, there's always round 3, right? But that never lasted, the moment was gone, and it was back to M. Bison dishing out the same old punishment you were used to. So near, and yet still as far away as ever.

And how about those old platformers, with the near impossible jumps? You'd make the run, and try to make that jump. If you were any less than at the very edge of the platform you'd fall to your death, or if you left the jump too late, you'd feebly tumble into the pit below. And yet we make that leap of faith again and again, heart in mouth as we wait to see if we'd made it.

But I guess that's the appeal of gaming, overcoming the difficulties, the challenges to be victorious. To win that cup, to make that jump, or to leave M. Bisom a bloody pulp on the mat, and to see that end sequence. I guess the more difficulty we face, the more we overcome, the more satisfying finally beating it is. That's why there will always be single player games, because as fun as multiplayer is, for me, nothing beats the achievement of beating the game!

Yeah, I remember Street Fighter II...the memories. I actually had it for the Mega Drive, and can anyone remember the controllers for that? The number of times I split my left thumb open trying to pull of Rye's fireballs. Owch!
As for games being difficult, recently I borrowed a copy of Tenchu II, and found that Rikimaru's second boss (the one in gold armour in the castle) is stupidly hard, no thanks to the control. Tenchu could do with a Zelda style 'Z-Targeting' lock-on button even if just for the boss characters. Actually, I'll maybe make a new post about suggested game improvements! Heh heh.

Has anyone ever sat down and thought about Ryu's story ? Like, how Capcom have described him and stuff. Basically, Ryu was always known as the "wandering warrior", travels the globe, searching for strong opponents, blah, blah, blah. Even in the first street fighter anime film, he just walks along, bag over shoulder. Now, he has no job, so that puts transport out the window - would love to know how he gets overseas ! Sorry but when this guy has no income, this would kinda limit the bum's travelling distance ;-))

The guy can't even seem to afford some footwear and as for those damn clothes he always wears they must stink to high heaven ! Would love to know where he gets those plane tickets in the game. Maybe Capcom should put him as "wandering warrior.....with a highly paid paper round".

Stryke - if you were Guile, you shoulda used his somersault kick ;-) Did anyone find that in the early versions of streetfighter 2 that if you were E.Honda against Balrog (the boxer here), you could just repeatedly do the 100 hand slap move and the poor bloke couldn't jump over it cause his jump was too weak ;-)) Mind you with Balrog, everything about him was weak.

Well there was a plane that flew there from your character, never had the same effect as Indiana Jones style tracing of paths.

The same reason people fire glowing blue balls out of their hands, breath fire, have extending limbs, can hover in mid air and generally do amazing feats of agility. Not to mention having a strange mutation after a plane crash or whatever it was. A bit like Mortal Combat (well the other way around) and the characters amazing ability to return after having been killed moments ago.

Sometimes though things can just be annoying, especially things that shouldn't be too hard. Like making jumps in games, rarely especially vital but on occasion unnecessarily difficult. The problem is when things seem less like a challenge and more like an inconvenience. Like the jump I mentioned, it may be that it seems like you are stuck at this little insignificant bit just moments before you fight a challenging boss. Some games do suffer from a little bit of level design that either presents you with a challenge that is more difficult than it should be, something that seems like an impossible challenge but is infact the wrong way or something that is impossible but isn't meant to be (though this is very rare and generally wont be seen in games that people actually buy).

The thing that makes me most annoyed is when you are just about to or just have completed a challenging bit and the game does an error deleting all your progress since the previous save or worse for the whole level in that kind of game.

Still I know the feeling of the very challenging bit that you are just about to complete but when you do fail it's not usually that bad, unless it's because of a flaw in the game such as a computer AI flaw (the person you were escorting falls off a ledge), a level design fault (the last guard sees you through a wall and is either too ready for you or shoots right through the wall) or who knows what else. It also depends on how far you have to go back, which I'll have to write a topic on.

Nah, Sagat was easy. Vega was the hardest. He climbed his damn fence and jumped on my preety blonde punk head (I was Guile) so many times, until I clued in on the fact that changing to Ryu and using super-duper Dragon Punch would kick in that Spainish guys head! Ah, the good old days...

Happens to me a bit on Champ Man sometimes. I lost the league on goal difference once, now that was gutting. Also losing the Europeon cup final on penalties after you have just equalised in the last minute is pritty damn painful!
