A flash of random inspiration just dawned on me.
All these crazy console wars that keep on happening, its all about the fear!!!

Up until now, I always thought that it was people such as crazy PS2 extremist Turbonutter (no offense) taking part in these wars. Actually believing their chosen console to be better and thus attacking the others for being inferior.
But its not, its people fearing their choice may have not been the "right" one.

Lets first of all look at the Ninty's amongst us. These people while enjoying all the hype and lovely pictures that Nintendo have released for them, only have to cast their minds back as far as the N64 to know that Nintendo can come unstuck. The N64 was good, there's no doubting that. However, it was beaten by a machine with half its power. It was good, but was it good enough? I held onto my dear Nintendo for a long time (who wouldn't after the SNES?) but eventually I had to accept that their N64 console just didn't deliver.
So there is alot of fear brewing in the Nintendo faithful that the new machine might also be sub-standard. I'm not sure how many would admit the to the fear, but i'll bet they know its there.

Then we have thoes behind the PS2. When the PS2 was still in hiding, there was nothing it couldn't do. Sony had created a beast that was going to rock the world. Why wouldn't we believe, afterall their debut console took on mighty giants; Sega and Nintendo and won.
However, after what most would admit was a fairly appauling launch, the Sonyphiles were a little less sure about their machine. Again, there are only a handful who would stand up and say it, much like the handful that dare admit the N64 was not all they'd hoped for.
Again we have fear brewing, if Sony isn't this all consuming unstoppable force then, they might get trounced by the opposition.

Then we have the X-Box. Yes Bill Gates's Microsoft have pretty much conquered the PC world, but they have never ventured into the console world before and as powerful as the machine looks will it really be able to take on; giant killers Sony? and with well experienced Nintendo set to make a seemingly amazing comeback, will the Microsoft machine really have what it takes?
To make matters worse there seems to be little backing from Japan, who pretty much comtrol the console market.
Fear. Brewing from the what may prove to be the Goliath of the next gen consoles, but with more to contend with than David.

As you can see, its not the blind faith people have in the superiority of their chosen console, but the fear that they've made the wrong decision. Almost an unwillingness to accept what might be. All except of course Turbonutter who does seem to have an over whelming faith in Sony to succeed, for this I respect him!

Hmm... perhaps this would be more at home in an ametuer psychology forum? How 'bout it Tony?

Thats not discussing it! If you didn't want to you should have just let it sink, did you think I'd be unable to work it out?

Absolutely, I think people should share their opinions. Share. Not force.
I was purely making an observation anyway. It does seem that a lot of these wars are governed by people trying to convince themselves they've made the right choice.

And Turbo, I didn't realise you were an evil hearted wind-up merchant :-)
Now I respect you even more!

Well, it's still okay for people to express their opinions on diffirent consoles. Plus it gives people a chance to hear the bonuses and negative points of consoles before they make a descision. So it does matter to some people what other people think.

F.E.A.R is actually the current single from Ian Brown....

Anyhoo, onto the actual topic. I agree completely. The only reason people go on about how crap the oppsoition is, is to justify to themselves the £250+ they spent on a console.

They think:

"Damn, I spent all my hard earned, I'd better make sure people know I didn't waste my money. How can I do that? Hmm, if I go round and tell everyone how crap the opposition is, maybe it'll mean I didn't waste my money afterall."

What they don't realise is, it only matters to one person what you think of a console, and that's you. You think it's great, fine, keep it, buy lots of games for it, have fun.

You think it's s**t? Fine, sell it, buy something else.

Either way, does it matter? Not really.

Perhaps, but I suspect that it's about people expressing their opinions. For example I got exactly what I wanted from my N64, maybe we didn't want the same things or maybe we just have differing opinions of the games. I wanted a console that had some good quality games, preferably games that would be different from the ones I could play on the PC and also to be fun to play when I couldn't use the PC, had friends round for multiplayer or was just in the mood for some quick gaming fun. That's exactly what the N64 delivered, games like Mario being high quality platform games, a type of game that doesn't really exist for the PC, Perfect Dark provided some quick action good fun first person shooting and also multiplayer and then there were the wrestling games which also can't be found on the PC and have good multiplayer. If I had bought a Playstation then I would have mostly had games that were the same type of thing you could get on the PC, yes I could still get multiplayer and yes there were wrestling games but the best overall choice for me was the N64 and I think I made the right choice.

Maybe some people do feel insecure and believe they have chosen the wrong console but I expect the majority just want to show their opinions on the different consoles.

No no no no no no, you've got it all wrong! I only argue about how good Sony is and how bad Nintendo is because it's great fun and I love seeing all the Nintys squirm (especially Dringo and Game).

Cool topic! Very good, and interesting to boot...

^_^

But seriously, you could be right... and i think you are...

I've just gotta go and eat dinner, but it'd be good to discuss until I get back... when i'l single handedly show you why Playstationers are scared of the Ninties!
