Technically this should be in the other PC forum, but seeing as you guys are far more into this technical stuff for gaming I figured it wsa the best place to ask.

My PC, running Windows XP, came with a Soudblaster Live 5.1 Digital Card - definitely a card and not onboard as it has all the connections and they are in the place for a card.

Under Windows XP Device Manager, where it lists everything you have in the PC and the driver, the driver is simply "Creative Soundblaster Live Driver (WDM)".

Now I know WDM stands for Windows Driver Model, a generic type of driver yes ?

So, I go to creative's site, download the new proper drivers, install and get as far as setup with the message;

"Creative Soundblaster Live Setup could not detect and Soundblast Hardware on your system. Please check before trying setup again."

This then screws the existing driver which has to be reinstalled.

I've tried using update driver, removing the driver and restarting, everything !

Anyone else got a similar configuration and actually updated the driver ?

:) It's the first time in a while I've ordered from SR so it'll be interesting to see how well the order goes.

Problem solved, went down to SR Notts, got myself a Soundblaster Live 5.1 Digital, uninstalled al lthe software relating to the cursed card, opened the Dell up, old card out, new card in, reconnect the audio wires and stuff, case shut, start up, drivers disc in. Everything is just perfect now. To celebrate I've ordered some of those Tsunami 5.1 speakers SR have on the site- I know they won't be top of the range but they suit my needs and give me the chance to try out 5.1 (which I've never had) cheaply.

Yup I do. It's not just 5.1 sound, EAX barely works with any games and the ones it does work on it has to be on low settings...Creative does a pack with 5.1 speakers and the card in according to their site, looks okay.

Hey PM - Do you *really* need the card? In my opinion its only useful if you have a 5.1 speaker set.
