I heard bad things about R-type final. It had a lot to live up to I guess but a lot of R-type fans have said it's disappointing, and that it's better to stick to R-type complete... I guess you probably disagree?

Metal Slug 3 is superb side-scroller.

Extremely tough, but ultimately rewarding.

R-Type Final is probably the hardest shooter I've played for some time. You played that yet mate?

Both Psyvariar and Dodonpachi are different to Ikaruga.

Where Ikaruga utilises the Black/White Chaining System, Psyvariar adopts a Buzz System, which see's you deflecting the enemy bullets using your Craft's Wings and Nose, the vulnerable part of your Craft is the cockpit, so if a stray bullet hits that, you lose a life and the Buzz Chain is ended. It is a superb shooter, but quite odd to describe, best thing is to download a video of it being played, which can be found at - http://ntsc-uk.domino.org//viewtopic.php [REMOVE ME] ?t=8786&highlight=psyvariar

Dodonpachi is different to both Psyvariar and Ikaruga, since it uses the traditional method of a shooter with a Combo System based on destroying as many enemies as you can without letting up for a second, otherwise the Combo is then ended. It gets frantic, but again, is a good shooter.

In fact, Import PS2 owners are spoilt for choice when it comes to shooters, there are some great ones such as:

Psyvariar
XII Stag
Shikigami no Shiro
R-Type Final
Dodonpachi Daioujou

You can't go wrong really if shooters are your thing.

Well I don't know about Do DonPachi, but Psyvariar is better than XII Stag. Stag is very plain graphically, and is not even half the challenge that Ikaruga is. It's not worth paying import prices for Psyvariar right now though because it's still due for a budget release in this country. I wouldn't put Psyvariar in the same bracket as Ikaruga either.

If you want a cracking shooter, Metal Slug X was released on PAL PS1 last week (no 60hz mode though). Ideally get Metal Slug 3 on import PS2. Of course these are side scrollers not vertical games, but they are top class.
