Ok - I know a few people on this forum firmly believe OXM is a pile of diseased tosh. And so did I. Until I brought this months magazine because of that KOTOR review.

It's not actually *that* bad, The reviews are actually decent this month, with KOTOR getting a whopping 9.5! Most of the other games reviewed are getting low scores - Its the "mediocre" season of gaming remember...The news section is decent enough, The play:more section is excellent and theres even a section devoted to LIVE gaming.

There's a feature on MMORPG's which is rather interesting.

Yes I know some of their review scores are totally wrong (Enter the Matrix being an example) but you gotta admit - Other magazines are'nt exactly perfect. And just give them a chance for monkeys sake - They're a good mag and the cover disk is DEFINATLY worth the money. Well, Kind of.

This months demos are: -

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Island Thunder - Amazing, I've been playing this mostly all morning and its excellent. Command your team mates through a plantation in Cuba - It's very realistic and will be awesome on Live! Not sure about the graphics though : Very tense and you feel a sense of acheivement when you complete the mission.

Otogi - Oh my God. This *is* a SEGA masterpiece, The graphics are beyond belief, Colorful and beautiful, yet the game is about good vs evil! I cannot stress how good this demo is - The combat, Jesus f**king christ, THE COMBAT, is the best i've ever seen. You can jump and float for a few seconds in mid air and totally hack and slash the hell out of your enemy, Rush away from danger, cast magical spells. Tiltawhirl - This is the game you wanted Morrowind's combat to be. It reaks of pure Sega brilliance. You can even demolish buildings! Double Kantana swords, small swords, large swords - ARG! Excellent!

This is where the demo disc goes sour.

Italian Job - What the f**k is this pile of monkey tosh. Handeling? WHAT HANDELING? The cars handle awfully, This game is for total rejects - It sucks so much balls I quit the game before I ended the race. The AI of the cops is about as clever as an ant on acid. The graphics are pretty boring and (again) the handeling is awful. This game is crap. Stay away from it.

Gladius - HAHAHAHA. You call this a game? A GAME? Its so boring it's beyond belief. Select character, select point to move to, character moves to point, select enemy to attack, push button, determine strengh of attack, character attacks enemy. Repeat. Its awful. You spend the first 5 minutes going through a load of cutscenes and text. Boring.

So 2 out of 4 demo's being good aint too bad. The demo is definatly worth it for playing Otogi.

Moving onto the "play:more" section of the disc, Its a bunch of videos readers have sent in on their gaming acheivements. Some of it is cool, Halo warthog jumps etc And there's a video called "Halo Heart Attack" which I found quite amusing.

One thing that dissapointed me about this disc is that they've taken away the "movies" section for some bizarre reason. Why is that? Oh well.

So anyway - Enough of me babbling on for hours - Get OXM. Give it a chance for once. And the KOTOR review is worth it :)

All single format magazines are balls, except NGC. Even that has gone downhill over the past months.

Yeah we'll just forget the years of GreyStation and GreyStation Poo and Dreampants, shall we?

P.S. OXM is still crap. But so is NOM.

OXM's points, whilst fanboyish, are typically based in truths though. Want to argue Nintendo's doing well online ? Didn't think so, want to argue GBA - GC connectivity is a winner ? Didn't think so...

Recently, I've actually been finding it really funny, and while the quality of writing may not be up to that in GamesTM, for example, they do get the information across with a decent joke or two.

That's not true - they made a fair few criticisms. They mentioned SSX3 may well be better than 1080 Avalanche, that FIFA 2004 was looking poor, Pokemon Colosseum won't be for everyone, P.N.03. seems style over substance, Starfox isn't impressive... and so on.

They're generally optimistic because these games are still in production so it's unfair to rate them so early on. Optimism is a quality in their writing I admire, and it may be down to bias, but they do make plenty of criticisms. Besides, OXM are just as bad with the optimism. Worse, probably.

My point was, I don't care if the magazine rates too highly (something NOM's started to stop doing actually) - I just don't like the petty attacks on other consoles that are found throughout OXM.

Maverick, NOM is biased to the point of insane idiocy, either that or they have no awareness of the real gaming market.

The quality of journalism is non existent, it's like it's been written by kids from the level of humour in it.

Their E3 round up was stupidly optimistic, not a single featured game was, in their opinion, anything other than a massive hit. now they covered 50 games. Either Nintendo has 50 'hit' games lined up for the end of the year, or NOM's writers are talking crap. Or have large deposits from Nintendo in their bank account...

Honestly, last time I bought it = top get the free Zelda CD - I wondered if the magazine was written by people in this reality.

OXM has it's faults, but regarding MS's industry postion, progress, sales etc it has always been 100% straight. Reviews are subjective, I can handle it if they get a few wrong, but at least OXM doesn't read like a failed corporate PR magazine, unlike NOM.
