The main focus of the console wars topics seems to have been people slagging off the PS2 to say the GC or XBox is better or people defending the PS2, chiefly by saying the other consoles are a bit pants. I'm seeing very few XBox vs. GC topics.
I've also noticed that many of the debates have centred around the Sony machine "not living up to the hype", well this is of course a matter of opinion. Those with a PS2 generally think that the machine does or will do, those without a PS2 generally disagree. Seeing as before the PS2 was launched most if not all thought the PS2 would be excellent (otherwise why all the complaints about the hype?), I began wondering about the other machines and peoples opinions on those.
Firstly, allow me to say I'm entirely nuetral on this. I have a PS2 and whether its lived up to the hype in the eyes of the world is irrelevant as the only opinion I'm worried about is my own and the PS2 has kept me vastly entertained and I imagine will continue to do so, I see it as money well spent. Also, I have no problems with the GC or X-Box - I'm sure there'll be lots of nice games that many folks will enjoy and if I had a large disposable income I wouldn't hesitate in checking these machines out either.
The question I have been led to raise is this, if the PS2 was "going to be great" before its launch and then "didn't live up to the hype" after the launch - Why are people so convinced that two consoles that haven't been released ANYWHERE as yet are definately going to be superior to the PS2? What's to stop those machines from "failing to live up to the hype".
As that is all they have to go on at the moment. Specs, screenshots, the occasional game clip and hype. No more and no less than the PS2 had.
Let's face it, many of us saw screenshots and clips of "the Bouncer" and thought - Woah, this is the future of gaming!!! - yet it turned out to be a BIG disappointment. In many peoples eyes, the N64 failed to do us justice. And Microsoft have never ventured into console gaming before. Is it really so inconcievable that Nintendo or Microsoft may do exactly what Sony did?
Thoughts?
And im not overjoyed.
Not his predictions on what the macine would be capable of.
Yes... I believe it will. Not because i'm a Nintendo fan, but because the whole launch is low key. There aren't too many consoles about... not even for the US launch compared to the show the PS2 put on! The games in Japan were all top-developer games, and 4 out of the first 5 will be majorly awaited titles from Nintendo themselves. (PIKMIN, Luigi, Melee and Waverace... all which should see good reviews from Famitsu.
I think the start will be average for Gamecube, but in the US in christmas, they'll fly off the shelves... Star Wars fans will go nutz over Rogue Leader, Nintendo fans will have what? Luigi, PIKMIN, SSB: Melee, Wave Race... and more, like Crazy Taxi and NHL. I think with regards to the launch, there is something for everyone. So it will live up to the hype, but be restricted by unit numbers and high pre-orders.
As for the X-Box, I think it'll do well... PC gamers will flood in from the comic stores, and hackers will disconnect and connect their foot to the accellerator and get to the nearest retailler. I doubt that the X-Box will have as much hype as the PS2, but it will meet the hype... remember Goaty's advertising post?... imagine how many people you can make think they want an X-Box with over $499,999,999.99!
I think all three companies will have even market share... Nintendo may have the edge because of the GBA, PlayStation may have the edge because of their 2 year headstart. My gran knows who Microsoft are, so go figure!
As for Hype, I think the PS2 will be the only one that doesn't hit home... but who cares, the games have come in droves over the past year... you think anyone getting a PS2 now will care about how it did 13 months ago?! Hell No!
Game
Nintendo however are known for delays and they can't afford to delay the launch of their Gamecube becasue the X Box is being released around the same time and they need to get into the competition before tere isn't any left. The Gamecube needs a good launch oterwise it's future is unpredictable and a flurry of Pokemon games will be needed to save it :D
The most interesting time in the 'console wars' will be Christmas 2001, thats when the console will be at their worst
You can't hate a single console just because it's Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft and if you do then you should stop reading NOM!
I completely agree with the post and each console has it's advantages so lets just leave it as a matter of opinion
