Seeing as there has been a vast influx of "console wars" topics springing their ugly heads once again, as opposed to getting annoyed about it, I thought I might jump on the band wagon... but purely to ask a question!

The main focus of the console wars topics seems to have been people slagging off the PS2 to say the GC or XBox is better or people defending the PS2, chiefly by saying the other consoles are a bit pants. I'm seeing very few XBox vs. GC topics.

I've also noticed that many of the debates have centred around the Sony machine "not living up to the hype", well this is of course a matter of opinion. Those with a PS2 generally think that the machine does or will do, those without a PS2 generally disagree. Seeing as before the PS2 was launched most if not all thought the PS2 would be excellent (otherwise why all the complaints about the hype?), I began wondering about the other machines and peoples opinions on those.

Firstly, allow me to say I'm entirely nuetral on this. I have a PS2 and whether its lived up to the hype in the eyes of the world is irrelevant as the only opinion I'm worried about is my own and the PS2 has kept me vastly entertained and I imagine will continue to do so, I see it as money well spent. Also, I have no problems with the GC or X-Box - I'm sure there'll be lots of nice games that many folks will enjoy and if I had a large disposable income I wouldn't hesitate in checking these machines out either.

The question I have been led to raise is this, if the PS2 was "going to be great" before its launch and then "didn't live up to the hype" after the launch - Why are people so convinced that two consoles that haven't been released ANYWHERE as yet are definately going to be superior to the PS2? What's to stop those machines from "failing to live up to the hype".

As that is all they have to go on at the moment. Specs, screenshots, the occasional game clip and hype. No more and no less than the PS2 had.
Let's face it, many of us saw screenshots and clips of "the Bouncer" and thought - Woah, this is the future of gaming!!! - yet it turned out to be a BIG disappointment. In many peoples eyes, the N64 failed to do us justice. And Microsoft have never ventured into console gaming before. Is it really so inconcievable that Nintendo or Microsoft may do exactly what Sony did?

Thoughts?

A fair if mildly inconsistent analysis of the state of the PS2, possibly deserving of its own thread (especially as it doesn't really bare much relevance to the original post)

Sony Brining out the PS2 earlier than the other consoles without the titles to support it wasn't as stupid as you all think.

The starting price of £300 made it more attractive for spoilt kids with manipulable parents.

It was then dropped to £270, which made it slightly more accessible to the general public.

Now it is £200, most gamers can afford it, and with the X-Box and Gamecube barely on the horizon, and still vulenerable to slipping (As Microsoft has shown), the PS2 already has a reasonably large user base.
The Christmas period will also bring some excellent new games like Smackdown: JBI, Tony Hawks 3 and Spy Hunter wil attract more people to buy the console.

The N64 is virtually obsolete, with very few big games coming out, bar excite bike, and the DC is being canned, even though it has a few quality titles out soon (Shenmue 2 etc.). There is nothing that will deter attract the public to any rival console.

This, coupled with the fact that plays DVD's, albeit badly (reputidly), means that the PS2 has a free market until Microsoft or Nintendo bring out their consoles, as well as the games to make the PS2 look obsolete.

You just said that in different words. Why?

I suppose the "problem" is; your time served, pro PS2, banter that fills us all with such delight, does not really answer the question at hand.

XBOX vs. GC
XBOX has toooo much power needed for games, although I have heard that it could have a hard drive or somethign but not the most anticpated games and no one is really excited about it.
GC has tonnes of anticipated games and nearly everyone is looking forward too it. Including me!!

Here's a GC vs XBOX war you can add to the very small list Tarrant!!
