I recommend Medeival/Shogun: Total War, immense strategy titles that let you conquer vast continents with mighty armies, both huge and involving RTS games.
Other than that I'd say get Warcraft 3, a strategy game every RTS fan shouldn't be without.
There are plenty more to recommend, but these are the ones I suggest you look at first.

Generals has superior graphics and gameplay, but if you want longevity go for Warcraft 3: You can buy an add on, Morecraft, for £2.99 at a 'The Works' factory outlet if you can find one. Thousands of extra levels. Unfortunately it's not too easy a programme to find.
