If there had never been a Castle Wolfenstein we may have never seen the likes of Quake, Quake 2, the DOOM series and maybe no 3d first person shoot em ups ever created!
And to think the game was made 9 years ago in 1992 - at a time where Duke Nukem was a 2d platformer (a good one yes but not 3d). Many of you young ones might not remember playing these quality games on shareware on a floppy disk but I certainly do and I remember playing Wolfenstein 3D when it just came out, and at the age of seven my mouth was wide open with amazement. From then on I grew to love the fps (first person shoot em up). I grew to love all titles whether they be Doom, Quake or Goldeneye 64. Wolfenstein had given me my favourite genre.
Since Wolfenstein the FPS is still going strong, very strong in fact with brilliant titles like Half Life and the Quake series. However it hasn't much changed. We still get titles of the same templates. We have to solve puzzles and blast everything in our ways. Deux Ex strayed from these boundaries but apart from this we don't get many more scenarios. We've got objectives now sure, but it is still a similar structure to the blast everything scenario.
I'm certainly not moaning. Although only the graphics seem to be getting more and more realistic all that matters is a good engine that is fun to play.
But look at the original Wolfenstein and see how far we have got. Awful graphics we'd laugh at if it came out today but it made this genre so it shouldn't be laughed at. For the first time it let us see through the eyes of the player and made it first person - more personal then the 3rd person view used in all other games at the time. And the game was one of the most enjoyable games ever made.
As for the multiplayer... well it's absolutely astounding. A multiplayer test demo was released (60mb in size and available on lots of ftps like Barrysworld). The gameplay, the graphics, the guns were absolutely astounding. There was even a flame thrower for goodness sake! It was so much fun. If one multiplayer map with it's limitations is this good I can only drool at the thought of what the solo mission and the full game in fact will be like. It's going to be far from worth the 30 or so quid to buy it.
So the 30th November, it's release date, is looming and Return to Castle Wolfenstein should be with us very shortly. The guys who made the original can show us what they have learnt over this near decade and show us how we have advanced. They made the original FPS so they are the Gods of FPS and the other games like DOOM and Quake their sons. This one is going to be the messiah of the FPS. This game is going to be big.
And I'm VERY VERY excited. If your not I'd like to ask why.

The question is does your PS2 love you back?
and the answer, well actually I don't think I wanna hear the answer.
Oh and Wolfenstein, if it's anything like the demo I played on the PC its no big wow, good game but certainly not anything ground breaking.
The First Person Shooter genre doesn't seem to have many places to go, even now what may be that last original idea for FPSs is being created, a Massively Multiplayer On-line First Person Shooter. So where will they go then? I'm sure they'll find something, but the main advantage of the FPS genre is that all people really want from it is good guns, smart bad guys and a decent story would be nice too. So as long as FPSs keep churning out new ways to blast your friends and foes to the high heavens (or the other way) I expect they will not fall out of gamers favours.
Wolfenstein 3D is one of my favourite games ever, and fighting the Madman on Episode 5 was one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had!
I expect to get this on PS2, as it probably won't fit on my PC.
