I for one am eagerly awaiting the release of a particular game. The sequel to the one that started it all - Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

If there had never been a Castle Wolfenstein we may have never seen the likes of Quake, Quake 2, the DOOM series and maybe no 3d first person shoot em ups ever created!

And to think the game was made 9 years ago in 1992 - at a time where Duke Nukem was a 2d platformer (a good one yes but not 3d). Many of you young ones might not remember playing these quality games on shareware on a floppy disk but I certainly do and I remember playing Wolfenstein 3D when it just came out, and at the age of seven my mouth was wide open with amazement. From then on I grew to love the fps (first person shoot em up). I grew to love all titles whether they be Doom, Quake or Goldeneye 64. Wolfenstein had given me my favourite genre.

Since Wolfenstein the FPS is still going strong, very strong in fact with brilliant titles like Half Life and the Quake series. However it hasn't much changed. We still get titles of the same templates. We have to solve puzzles and blast everything in our ways. Deux Ex strayed from these boundaries but apart from this we don't get many more scenarios. We've got objectives now sure, but it is still a similar structure to the blast everything scenario.

I'm certainly not moaning. Although only the graphics seem to be getting more and more realistic all that matters is a good engine that is fun to play.

But look at the original Wolfenstein and see how far we have got. Awful graphics we'd laugh at if it came out today but it made this genre so it shouldn't be laughed at. For the first time it let us see through the eyes of the player and made it first person - more personal then the 3rd person view used in all other games at the time. And the game was one of the most enjoyable games ever made.

As for the multiplayer... well it's absolutely astounding. A multiplayer test demo was released (60mb in size and available on lots of ftps like Barrysworld). The gameplay, the graphics, the guns were absolutely astounding. There was even a flame thrower for goodness sake! It was so much fun. If one multiplayer map with it's limitations is this good I can only drool at the thought of what the solo mission and the full game in fact will be like. It's going to be far from worth the 30 or so quid to buy it.

So the 30th November, it's release date, is looming and Return to Castle Wolfenstein should be with us very shortly. The guys who made the original can show us what they have learnt over this near decade and show us how we have advanced. They made the original FPS so they are the Gods of FPS and the other games like DOOM and Quake their sons. This one is going to be the messiah of the FPS. This game is going to be big.

And I'm VERY VERY excited. If your not I'd like to ask why.

You little kid so much you have missed in your childhood! You have been deprived. This release will mean a lot to me it's the next game on my list of ones to get. I'm expecting a game like Medal of Honour crossed with Half Life, Goldeneye, Quake, Doom and the original Castle Wolf.

If it's not brilliant I'm going to be very confused and upset. But it's ID so we haven't got anything to worry about surely!

I am looking forward to playing the sequel of the game that really gave birth to the first person shooter. Let's just hope it plays as good as it looks, and can keep up with the likes of Unreal Tournament 2 and Medal of Honour: Frontline.

FPS games have pretty much dragged gaming and technology into its current state of maturity.

Games like Duke Nukem 3D pushed the technology of its day to the limits. The games also relied on a combination of gameplay, comparitively advanced graphics and humour to satisfy all but the most of cynics.

Now today games like Return to Castle Wolfentein and Operation Flashpoint are still doing this, but to a lesser extent.

Technology has advanced faster than the games made for it, and any PC bought from a retailer is more than powerful enough for any game you can throw at it. Even the slowest of PC's available are about 800Mhz, and if bought on the high street, have a price tag to match.

We need more ground breaking games to push the technology of today. It sounds hypocritical to request more graphically pleasing games with the current titles being offered on consoles, but over the past 2-3 years, PC games have not made the leaps and bounds that other games have made.

The subtle advances in gameplay such as more realistic AI and more internet based gameplay have made it look like games have reached it is limits.

New games have seemed to try to be as realistic as possible, like Operation Flashpoint, where if you are told to get down, it, for a welcome change, is a good idea. This compares the fad of a couple of years ago that a game would be successful if it was controversial. Games like GTA did this, but in such a way that the gameplay benefited. Games companies seem to think that following a set trend will guarantee a success. This has led to a number of good games, but have been made look average due to the influx of similar looking games. Games like Serious Sam and Severance: Blade of Darkness have been affected by this, as both have good gameplay and graphics.

Hopefully Serious Sam proves that a game can look impressive, and a plot to match

Actually, I love FPS'.

And what Stryke has explained sounds like a lot of fun...there's this amazing bit on Red Faction where you take control of a turret which shoots out rockets, and about 20 guards invade the room...it was pure chaos. Especially with the new technology Red Faction used-being able to destroy the environment. There was no environment left once I'd finished with the turret. :D

You are so right... Lets do all of that. It will be great fun.

Leprachaun on Rakuga's shoulder (whispering): He was being sarcastic laddie!
Rakuga: He was?
Leprachaun: Jah.
Rakuga: How can you tell?
Leprachaun: Well laddie he used words like "gah" and "so much skill".
Rakuga: So?
Leprachaun: JUST BURN HIM! BURN EM ALL!

I clicked on this topic thinking it was going to say Shenmue 2, which will be a great game, but the best game ever, I dson't think so. It will be the last game I get for my DC, except for perhaps Ecco The Dolphin 2 if it's ever realeased (but I won't be getting it if I hear it's being released on GC.

Anyway, I'll shut up now. I don't wnat to ruin everyones train of thought about Castle Wolfenstein with my babbling.

:)
