Well it will depend on the game, Half Life for instance has a pretty good net engine, but then something like MOHAA can give some dodgy pings even on broadband.
Plus you're on AOL, and I know they can be rubbish for gaming. As I said earlier, you can connect fast, but if the pings are jumpy, it's not going to help. Plus a faster connection can lead to errors, leading to having to resend packets, slowing everything down. I always found HL & Tribes were easily playable at 44,000 and 45,333bps, but that will be dependant upon your modem and phone line condition. Might be an idea to unplug anything unneccessary from your line to reduce noise while connecting; extra phones, answering machines etc.

Connection speed has little to do with online playing. It's all down to latency.
