Take GT3 and MGS2 for Example, two great games with the best graphics for that genre, But lets face it, your going to be hard pushed to find another game in the same genre which will beat it in the gameplay or graphics department, in the end its all down to the developers, Konami and Polyphony Digital are great developers, but the question is can other companys follow suit?, With the right development team and good use of hardware yes, but how long will we have to wait for the same quality?, hopefully not to much longer as developers get to grips with the ps2 hardware, considering that GT3 are first generation, it will be interesting to see what the sequels will be like, GT4? MAYBE even MGS3 if we are lucky, the PS2 has only just begun to show what it is capable of.
As i read through many reviews i think (personally) that some games are being Harshly reviewed, the main reasons for this is they just don't live up to the hype, i know we can't stop hype but ultimately it can ruin games, people get their hopes up really high and it turns out to be poor or a very average experience, one fine example is The Bouncer, i remember when i first saw this game, it looked truely next gen (and it does now), and it looked to be a AAA title, the release in Japan came and it turned out to be Very Average, although the graphics were great, the gameplay was repetative and the longivity was something like 1hour for the Skilled gamer, this was one of the biggest disappointments of 2001, i agree with everyone on this, it was NOT harsh and it received fair reviews but the game never could live up to the hype, but many games i have read about recently have been poorly reveiwed, one game which i think was badly Reviewed was Extreme G 3 in PSM2, they said it had a few problems like the fact that it was hard as one of the main points, but as i'm sure many of you will agree with me, it deserved at least 75-80, thats the only average review i have seen of this game, Certain Sites/Magazines i think expect supreme quality from 3rd party developers which lets face it is expecting quite a lot from Developers which are finding the hardware hard to use or are just getting to grips with the machine.
Some Mags are to blame, they hype the games up too much and when u actually play the game you are left thinking "the previews looked so good, the mag said this would be a great game", which can be annoying if you have waited a long time for the game to come out, what can we do stop this?, cut down on hype, to some of you this may sound like a bad thing, but in some cases i think this will decrease disappointment for some games, Hype is a good thing and a bad thing, some people think that MGS2 is ovehyped, i don't believe this but because the release is so far off along with Final Fantasy X will this hype be the downfall of the game when they are released in March 2002?, only time will tell, but i hope this is not the case bcause those are two of best PS2 games i and many of you have seen.
Do you guys think mags are being harsh on reviews or do you think Hype is what ultimately ruins games ?

Anyway, I agree with you Spike. When someone talks about a certain game all the time, anticipating what it will be like when it comes out, looking amazed at the graphics and the seemingly perfect gameplay people begin to wonder if this IS to be the game to be saving up for. Magazines always say something along the lines of "Expect this to be huge" or "This one is well worth looking out for"
Nowadays people really take good graphics and gameplay for granted and it is now harder and harder to please the public. Take Dark Cloud for example. When the game was first shown at E3 show in 2000, everyone was astonished by how great that game looked. It was colourful, original and innovative. I actually said to myself-"That game is going to be absolutely massive" and I started saving my pennies...
And then the game has gone into hiding for a bit.And when it came out, everyone was disappointed. The magazines were not impressed anymore and they carried their so called "enthusiasm" into their reviews.
People are now very fussy. They try to pick out any mistakes and faults that the game may contain and heres where reviewers go in for the kill. "Could have been a classic if not for poor controls" or "So close but yet so far" and this makes readers think whether they should buy the game or not.
Of course there are some games that are guaranteed to get one of the best scores in any magazine. FF X is one of them. People now that it just cant flop. It may have its faults but its not gonna fail
I think that magazines should stop getting peoples hopes up and instead give them more facts rather than mention how excellent the certain part of the game is in almost every sentence
Thank you
