Take GT3 and MGS2 for Example, two great games with the best graphics for that genre, But lets face it, your going to be hard pushed to find another game in the same genre which will beat it in the gameplay or graphics department, in the end its all down to the developers, Konami and Polyphony Digital are great developers, but the question is can other companys follow suit?, With the right development team and good use of hardware yes, but how long will we have to wait for the same quality?, hopefully not to much longer as developers get to grips with the ps2 hardware, considering that GT3 are first generation, it will be interesting to see what the sequels will be like, GT4? MAYBE even MGS3 if we are lucky, the PS2 has only just begun to show what it is capable of.
As i read through many reviews i think (personally) that some games are being Harshly reviewed, the main reasons for this is they just don't live up to the hype, i know we can't stop hype but ultimately it can ruin games, people get their hopes up really high and it turns out to be poor or a very average experience, one fine example is The Bouncer, i remember when i first saw this game, it looked truely next gen (and it does now), and it looked to be a AAA title, the release in Japan came and it turned out to be Very Average, although the graphics were great, the gameplay was repetative and the longivity was something like 1hour for the Skilled gamer, this was one of the biggest disappointments of 2001, i agree with everyone on this, it was NOT harsh and it received fair reviews but the game never could live up to the hype, but many games i have read about recently have been poorly reveiwed, one game which i think was badly Reviewed was Extreme G 3 in PSM2, they said it had a few problems like the fact that it was hard as one of the main points, but as i'm sure many of you will agree with me, it deserved at least 75-80, thats the only average review i have seen of this game, Certain Sites/Magazines i think expect supreme quality from 3rd party developers which lets face it is expecting quite a lot from Developers which are finding the hardware hard to use or are just getting to grips with the machine.
Some Mags are to blame, they hype the games up too much and when u actually play the game you are left thinking "the previews looked so good, the mag said this would be a great game", which can be annoying if you have waited a long time for the game to come out, what can we do stop this?, cut down on hype, to some of you this may sound like a bad thing, but in some cases i think this will decrease disappointment for some games, Hype is a good thing and a bad thing, some people think that MGS2 is ovehyped, i don't believe this but because the release is so far off along with Final Fantasy X will this hype be the downfall of the game when they are released in March 2002?, only time will tell, but i hope this is not the case bcause those are two of best PS2 games i and many of you have seen.
Do you guys think mags are being harsh on reviews or do you think Hype is what ultimately ruins games ?
your Views and thoughts would be Appreciated

Its just the tomb raiders and Fifa's of this world that annoy me.
Since the release of the PS1 there have been a vast, vast amount of different game genres to be released. On the mega drive there were only a few genres that could be made, and the saturn was not up to much. Things like all the sport games e.g. football, NHL, Basketball etc. Then there are the obvious RPG's like resident evil, Adventure games like Tomb Raider and racing games along with many more.
As the years have gone on, there have been games that cover every single game genre you can think of, which was in the end, inevitable. What this means is that games developers are going to do is use old gaming genres, for example,as i have said before, Tomb Raider is a prime example. This genre has been used in the many sequals and lots of games. This is all good apart from they get more boring as the more they come, very rairly are new ideas put in, all we get are new puzzles which are all very similar and a new viechle to use. And the developers think we dont know, and think we will say WOW, and will buy it, which the majority of gamers do.
However a lot of us serious gamers see through these tricks (im not saying anyone here is not by the way) as do the game revewers. So, when they review games, they review them based upon what previous games were like, and based upon what similar games are out. So when new Tomb Raider is released, they will say "So is this better and much different from the previous one...no", therefore it will get a poor rating.
These days only really good, ground braking games get good marks, which is good as it lets us know what games are worth our money, who wants to pay for a game like the ones we already own? Not me and certainly not you. I am contemplating becoming a games journalist myself, so hopefully i will do a good job.
