Okay, you all know the story - with the recent carnage in the US, the UK government is considering introducing ID cards.

Some say that they would solve nothing as far as terrorism is concerned... and I would tend to agree.

Others say that they are an infringement of civil liberties - which I think is nonsense.

So are you for or against?

Not so much a 'mocking' as a light-hearted dig at your expense.

I trust you'll take no serious offence. :-)

Well, I did one last night under the "Eye for an Eye" thread, but it was too well argued and thought out for a response.

So, I shall stick to ma...hang on, you're mocking me aren't you?

Oh, go on!

A day without a Goatboy rant is like a day without a Dan2K1 'why didn't I win' whinge!

Only Goaty rants are far more rare...

Just what I was going to say now.

If people can get fake passports and stuff, then surely they'll be able to get fake ID cards as well? Thusly, completely failing to prevent terrorism, as they'll be able to get one if they need one.

Also, as I said, most people already have an ID card anyway, your photo driving licence. What's the point in having another one?

I can see both sides.

I don't think they'd prevent terrorism etc., as they clearly haven't in other countries.

But they would (more or less) prove that you were who you said you were, and how old etc.

I don't see how they can be any more of a civil liberties infringement than, say, a credit card. And plenty of other countries have them without their 'free' population being oppressed.

Although... you do potentially open up a new black market for forged cards.

I think my feelings on this can be guessed before I even state them.

So I wont and spare you a lengthy rant using words like "Orwellian" "Draconian" and "Surveillance"
