Through some of my varied jobs, I spent 3 months at a private psychiatric hospital near Epping.
I ran the kitchens there, it was an ok place.
Some of the people were heartbreaking.
7yr old girls in for Anorexia, people with certain afflictions.
Except there was one guy there that really, really made me think.
We weren't allowed to ask them why they were there, except you always did.
One guy, Ray.
Normal as you like, didn't have any obvious symptoms of mental difficulties.
So, after asking him why he was there, he told me he was from another planet and was here to study us to see if we were worth approaching with a view to sharing cultures.
"Ok Ray."
And he laughed, "It's ok mate, I dont expect you to believe me, that's why I'm in this place. They think I'm insane"
"Ok Ray, so why are you still here?"
"Because I'm not allowed to make phone calls and have no relatives. I've got no way of contacting home."
He was rational and lucid about this, and could fully understand that people would think him a loony.
He was really interesting to talk to though, I couldnt find fault with his claim.
And he did raise one question to me that I had never thought about.
"Why do you all think you see UFOs?"
"The lights in the sky"
"That's my point. If we are capable of crossing galaxies in ships, why do you think we even need lights? How can we be that advanced technically, but still need to shine lights everywhere?"
And I still can't answer that one.
And I don't believe it because of science fiction - I like science fiction because I believe in alien life.
The thing is, whether they're here or not, we'll never accept it while we continue to label anyone who claims to be 'alien' as a nutter.
Unless they really *do* appear as 'greys' or in some way noticeably different from us, we'll never believe it in our current state of mind.
And if and when they do approach, we'll probably try to blow them out of the sky anyway.
