Through some of my varied jobs, I spent 3 months at a private psychiatric hospital near Epping.
I ran the kitchens there, it was an ok place.
Some of the people were heartbreaking.
7yr old girls in for Anorexia, people with certain afflictions.
Except there was one guy there that really, really made me think.
We weren't allowed to ask them why they were there, except you always did.
One guy, Ray.
Normal as you like, didn't have any obvious symptoms of mental difficulties.
So, after asking him why he was there, he told me he was from another planet and was here to study us to see if we were worth approaching with a view to sharing cultures.
"Ok Ray."
And he laughed, "It's ok mate, I dont expect you to believe me, that's why I'm in this place. They think I'm insane"
"Ok Ray, so why are you still here?"
"Because I'm not allowed to make phone calls and have no relatives. I've got no way of contacting home."
He was rational and lucid about this, and could fully understand that people would think him a loony.
He was really interesting to talk to though, I couldnt find fault with his claim.
And he did raise one question to me that I had never thought about.
"Why do you all think you see UFOs?"
"The lights in the sky"
"That's my point. If we are capable of crossing galaxies in ships, why do you think we even need lights? How can we be that advanced technically, but still need to shine lights everywhere?"
And I still can't answer that one.
The fact we needed oxygen and sunlight to function put us on a level with plants.
He wasn't rude about it, just explaining to me how we aren't held in high regard by other species in this galaxy.
Was an experience to say the least.
Personally, I do believe in aliens. My reasoning goes something like this...
There are zillions of other planets out there. Some of which must be able to support life. Our galaxy is not one of the oldest either, so if life developed elsewhere it would probably be far, far more advanced than we are.
Assmuming that no other planet could possibly have had similar conditions to ours, is just a little arrogant.
He was absolutely normal (except for the alien thing), he didnt seem to pose a threat of any kind.
But there must have been a reason, it was just intense to talk to him.
There were others there that clearly were better off being looked after, but not Ray.
Millions of people across the world believe that just over 2000 years ago, a child was born to a Virgin bride (and if that's not strange enough) this child grew up to have mysterious powers, it fact it was believed that he could walk on water and then turn water into wine (wish I could).
To me the above sounds like the biggest load of tripe ever but as I say Millions of people believe this tripe and their are free citizens, not locked away under the mental health act.
So why is Ray and I don't know how may more people locked away for something they believe in? I like several other people (especially Americans) believe that one day (although probably not in our lifetime) we shall be encounter by an Alien species. So should I be locked away?
*second thoughts don't answer that).
I myself believe in other life elsewhere and just ignore all this about God and his 7 days (no offence).
So the Big Bang... 1. It is was not a bang like a firework but like a flower forming... well all very nice BUT
HOW THE HELL DID THAT HAPPEN? So in the middle of *space* gases formed and went YAS and made planets... all very nice but how did the gases for that form and so on... that is the biggest question too myself.
Also worm-holes... we have not seen them merely partly true due to some explanation but nodody has seen or knows what happens... we don't really know anything... thats why its m job in the future too find out ;-)
Also Wookiee's question about it expanding which also gets my petty immature brain working.
Ah well back to that bloody room of mine.
But it's exciting in its own way.
Heavy discussions on these subjects make me go cold - the hairs on my neck stand on end, and sometimes - daft as it seems - I have 'tears' in my eyes, though I'm not actually crying. I don't know what causes that, but it's a weird reactions.
Also, though as you know I'm not a religious person, though I am scared of dying, I don't believe that death is 'the end'. I don't believe in a heaven or hell, but I believe that we carry on in some form or other; otherwise all of this that we go through is for nothing if it all just 'stops' one day.
Whether there's a 'soul' that carries on, or we carry on as energy of some kind, I don't know... but it's too much to go through just to 'end'.
I cant even begin to try and explain the things he said to me about this all.
Basically, to the other forms of life, we are at a level of plankton.
We need oxygen to survive and sunlight.
We are weak and feeble as a species, and hardly worth bothering about.
Apparently, where Ray comes from, they exist on a level of pure energy. No physical form, hence no craft needed to travel, as you are at one with the universe anyway.
It's not even a real, corporeal thing.
It's an illusion we have, we can only see the edges of the things that we understand, same as amoeba are unable to conceive of other life-forms such as us.
And it got more complicated than that.
> It made my head hurt to think about this stuff.
Same here - but I love discussing it.
My mum's the typical 'ostrich' - denies it all, refuses to believe there can be life anywhere else.
I can't go along with that - with the billions/trillions of other planets in our galaxy alone, there is no way I will ever believe that this is the only one supporting life.
It always annoys me when people say, "well, nothing could live on planet X because it has no atmosphere/has a corrosive atmosphere". Nonsense! Nothing life that *we* know of could survive, but who says there aren't life forms which can survive in such conditions? We generally (as a species) still have a very blinkered view of things.
My dad and myself have often been up until the early hours discussing issues such as this, time travel etc...
Things like: Scientists say that the Universe is still expanding, what is it expanding into? If it's still expanding, then there must be a definite 'edge' - what's beyond it?
*Flibble*
My brain hurts!
I'm probably going to do Physics and Astronomy at Uni.
I'll be the best looking guy in the place :-D
Honestly.
Went to the open day and there all these minging people
SLAP
Sorry chnaged subject.
To the question... veeeerrrryyy innnttteeerrressting
Ray wasn't mad, not in insane and crazy terms anyway.
We sat and talked about movies, music...everything you chat about usually, except Ray claimed to be from another planet.
He wouldn't discuss it in detail because "Then you'd be in here with me. Trust me though, we are aware of you lot and just can't decide whether to approach you or not".
Apparently the universe is pretty annoyed with us keep throwing things into space and leaving them there to rot.
And it's not expected that we'll last another 2,000 years.
It made my head hurt to think about this stuff.
