don't suggest logic, i'm free of it

well it could have meant competition but the word "icon" kinda puts that idea out.

Surely it must do something else as well, nearly all viruses cuase something, even if it is not noticeable at first?

There is actually a virus that does this, I had it. Can't remember what it's called, but it's quite harmless, only changes icons.

If rebooting doesn't help, try right-clicking on the icons, one at a time and click on Properties on the drop-down menu. There should be a button in there called "Change Icon". Now search your P.C's hard drive (this may take a while) until you find the original icon(s). Click on the icon you want and click OK on all the windows opened.

Hey presto!
It's back to normal.

There could be a number of reasons behind this. One could be the internet software you are using. I've seen this happen before and the only way to stop this is to remove the software completely. Other things to try first. If you have antivirus software use it. Check you hard disk by running the scandisk program. Then finally check the individual icon preferences as said by others.

My icons used to occasionally mess up. I find a reboot sorts it out OK.
