From IGN:

September 10, 2003 - Nintendo of America today told IGNcube that it has reached an agreement with America Online by which the Internet provider will become the official preferred ISP for GameCube.
According to the agreement, developers who choose to create online games for GameCube will be licensed AOL connectivity software that will enable their games to connect online through AOL. Nintendo stated that this same rule would apply to any potential online GameCube software it decided to create in the future.

The company reaffirmed that as of yet it is not developing any online games for GameCube. It stated: "To be clear, this does not indicate the unveiling of a new online gaming approach from Nintendo. Nor does it signify that we have changed our position on the current business viability in the online console gaming field."

Nintendo said that as part of the agreement many of its products would be spotlighted on key AOL and AOL Time Warner websites and that the two companies are discussing means of promoting AOL's new broadband service, including the possibility of bundling AOL demo discs with the GameCube.

----------

Could this be signs that Ninty are actually listening to the customers? Although it doesn't mention anything in there to do with Nintendo Europe, I assume this service will be available in the UK. They haven't started any online games as of yet :( but Nintendo could sneak an online option into Mario Kart, COULDN'T YOU NINTENDO. *Wakes Up* Or maybe not...

Surly you would just use AOL to run your Gamecube... and knowing Nintendo you will be able to use AOL for FREE (remember Nintendo want online gaming to be free) if not then the big N will let you use any network but recommend AOL.

Plus... and more importantly to Tilt... I don't care how well done X-box live is all Nintendo have to do is put some of its top franchises online and Microsoft can do nothing but realize that selling better doesn't make their online games better.

right, big aol post here:

aol has a high ping on Broadband, but i can still play online games pefectly(i play UT2003 all the time, its great), so this is not a problem

Nintendo shouldn't choose AOL, its s***, but its what i hav(not through choice, i had to hav it(dont ask)) so i'm happy

aol only prevents you from using internet explorer if you have the parental settings on, because this is classed as a program that can get you into the 'bad' sites...just put yerself as 18+ and it'll work fine

i expect AOL has been chosen because they gave nintendo a huge amount of money to do it..AOL is going to go bankrupt soon i'll bet, and this is a way of getting more people joining.

Xbox live is David Copperfield - classy, quality show.

PS2 online stuff is David Blaine - never going to be as good, relies on a few attention-grabbing things while being pretty mediocre all round.

The gamecube was more ellusive, could have been anything. Now that we know it'll be with AOL monkey suckers, they're Paul Daniels - nobody's laughing any more.

Anyone who thinks that AOL is good needs a slap.

My sister downloaded AOLIM and the amount of crap that it installed!

Every single place that it could, it stuck a 'Sign up for AOL Internet' button...

It did my head in.

But AOL broadband cannot be used to play games?

That's what they said. The ping time is too high...

Stupid thing.
