Anyone here heard of a band called Arab Strap?

I've got one of their tracks, "The First Big Weekend", which I think is fantastic.

Only heard the 3rd symphony, it was playing on Radio 3 one night and it made me pull over to listen to it finish.
Miserere is in Harlow Virgin, so might be picking that up at lunchtime as well as Eels and Cake (if they have it)

I've now got my projected dance compilation down to a massive 4 disc set and will whittle it further (though I might not get it down to one disc). There is a reason all dance compilations come in double packs - the songs are really long and you gan get about 8 on a CD!

I wanted to put some Gorecki inspired loveliness on the sampler but due to constraints of space that may have to wait. Have you got any other Gorecki stuff? I've got a few other CDs (Miserere - some amazing works for voice only and adaptions of polish folk songs) and some work for the Kronos quartet. I'd like to hear his second symphony which is supossed to be very good but have never come accross it.

I do actually like compiling sampler CDs. My last project was the best soul CD in the world (ever!), 30 tracks of my favourite 60's/70's soul and damn fine it was too. I should sell it it's that good.

My next project will be 1 CD of the best, funky as hell, underground hip hop of recent years (strictly no g-funk, thugs or players allowed).

I love having a CD-writer.

Yeah, it was me that mentioned Gorecki. I've got the 3rd Symphony (Sorrow) and it's amazing.
As for hip-hop, a massive fan.
Most recent purchases in that dept have been:

Mark B & Blade
Roots Mahnuva
Rodney P stuff (Wordlab mainly)
Rza "Bobby Digital".

Dilated Peoples are cool, really trying to get some Deliquent Habits.

As for dance music, I don't really know that much.
Got The Aphex Twin, I know I can't get Goldie at all, that drum 'n bass stuff just sounds wrong to me.
Apart from that, I only know chart dance stuff, which is no indication of a genre.

I'm happy to listen to anything at all mate.

Coldcut are hip hop (or abstract hip hop), Fila Brazillia could fall into a similar category. God knows what you'd call Aphex Twin. Some people have been known to call it 'intelligent' dance music but that is incredibly snobbish and narrow minded. I guess its just experimental techno.

Generally though I just think of it all as dance music and let the music press worry about which category it belongs in.

I'm more of a Trance fan, I have to confess.

I'm not normally into getting compilation albums either, but the Euphoria series are pretty damn fantastic.

I've got Pure, Trancedental and Progressive, they're all pretty damn fantastic, but that doesn't seem to be your sort of thing.

On the subjuect, how would you classify The Aphex twin and Fila Brazillia, Cold Cut etc. I woulndn't call it Dance, but I'm not sure what genre it would come into exactly.

Mainly into Drum 'n' Bass, Hip Hop, general breakbeaty stuff. A few people I like as an idea:
u-ziq, optical, photek, doc scott, sabres of paradise, aim, lamb, dj food, dj's shadow, krush, anything on Ninja Tune, Squarepusher, Grantby, Luke Vibert, Metalheads records, Prototype etc.

Plus loads of US and UK undergrounf hip hop like Dilated Peoples, Styles of Beyond, Aesop Rock and Numbskullz.

Lately I have been getting to Rave and Techno.
