Who is most responsible for the death of Eva Smith?
The play “ an inspector calls” was written by J.B Priestley in 1945 but the play was set in 1912 before world war one and before the Titanic sank.
In 1912 there was no welfare state so all the rich kept their money and they didn’t have to give money to the poor. In the play J.B Priestley is showing people what it was like before the welfare state was made and how the poor were treated especially the women.
The play is structured in real time so nothing happens two years later or a month later. When a scene ends it begins exactly the same way it ended like when Eric stands in the doorway at the end of Act 2 then at the beginning of Act 3 he is still standing there. Which means the audience are meant to fell that they are on trial as well.
Priestley’s purpose in writing the play is that he wants to show people what was happening to the poor before the welfare state was set up and how they were treated.
The life the Birlings have is a very posh and rich life. The way they can just get port from a decanter and the posh cutlery they have shows how wealthy they are. They don’t care about the out side world because what they have is all they need.
The family are talking about business and Arthur was talking about his friend who had checked over a ship called the Titanic and was travelling on it at the weekend, the ship was “absolutely unsinkable” (but it sank) Arthur said.
He also stated that the “ little argument” (which turned into World War one) between England and Germany would result in nothing and it would be forgotten by next year. One of the closer to home things he predicted was “ the rebellion between the workers and the bosses won’t happen” (eventually it turned into the big rebellion)
At the Dinner Party Arthur tells his about his friend on the Titanic and The England and Germany argument, which he predicted all the wrong things, which shows that he doesn’t understand the world around him, but he thinks he does.
The Inspector questions him and he reveals that Eva Smith was a worker at his factory. She had worked there for over a year and his foreman at the factory was about to promote her to a leading operator in charge of a small group of girls working in the factory.
He revealed that he sacked Eva Smith because after he came back from holiday in august they went on strike for more money. They wanted twenty-five shillings a week instead of the twenty-two and six they were getting at the moment.
Arthur found out she was one of the ringleaders of the strike and gave her the sack.
Arthur does not fell any remorse or guilt about the death of Eva and he thinks that it was other peoples fault for her death and not his
He speaks to Inspector Goole as if he is bigger then the Inspector and tries to bully him into leaving his family and threatens him with “ I am good friends with you Police chief inspector and I will make sure he knows about this”. I think Arthur had tried this before with many other people and it had worked, But this time the Inspector doesn’t back down.
He talks to his family as if he was in charge and any thing they say he has to answer back to them so they know he is the boss.
Arthur thinks the lower class are filthy lowest of the low thieves and would never ever think about talking nicely to one. He thinks he is a pillar of Society and every body loves him and wants to be around him, But really hardly any one likes him and that is probably because he tells every one about how “ he is next to be knighted by the queen”.
The way he tells the Inspector “ Do you know who I am” is meant to make the Inspector back scared but instead the Inspector stood firm and I think that shocked Mr Birling because no one had ever been that way with him before.
Mr Birling has not learnt any thing by the end of the play as he always shifts the blame onto ever one else except himself.
He even tries to blame Eva herself for starting the strike for being poor and eventually killing herself.
At the dinner party Sheila receives an engagement ring from Gerald and she says words like “mummy” “darling” and “beauty” which is words babies would use and she is spoilt by her mum and dad, which makes the audience dislike her.
We discover she was connected to Eva Smith because when Sheila went to Milwards to try on a dress it looked awful on her, but when the shop assistant (who was Eva) smiled and put the dress up to her self it suited her perfectly and Sheila didn’t like it.
She got Eva the sack sacked because she got in a mood with Eva because she was jealous at Eva looking good in the dress and Sheila not looking good so Sheila complained to the manager and said if he didn’t sack her then she would never use the shop again. So Milwards had no choice other then to sack her.
Sheila is one of the only people who feels guilt and remorse about Eva’s death and thinks that Eva’s death is all her fault because if she hadn’t got Eva the sack she would still be alive today.
She talks to the Inspector with respect and treats him like “ a god like figure” because he seems to know every thing and knows what every one has done and when they did what each of them did.
She speaks to the Inspector with more respect then she gives to the family members because I think that she thinks the Inspector should have more respect because of who he is.
At the end of the play she has learnt the most because she feels responsible and deeply regrets what she had done to Eva and would never do any thing like that again.
She also thinks that every one has a part to play in the death even though the rest of the family blame every one else except themselves.
She blames herself and has learnt not to be nasty to people who are not as “well off” or not on the same “ Social Standard” as her or her family and she now knows that she should treat every one equally.
At the dinner party Sybil is always telling every one in the family off like when she told Eric off for not saying any thing but when he says (Pg. 5) “ all the best! She’s got a nasty temper on her some – times but she’s not bad really. Good old Sheila.”
She is connected to Eva because when Eva came to ask for help Sybil interviewed her to see whether or not she was suitable for money or not. She asked the Brumleys charity where Sybil was chairwomen.
She refused to give Eva help because Eva said she was called “ Mrs Birling” and said she stopped getting money from the father because the money he was giving her was stolen.
Mrs Birling refused to give her money even though Eva was pregnant and desperate. Mrs Birling said Eva should make the father do the honourable thing and marry her (Sybil did not know at the time that her own son Eric was the father of Eva’s child)
She feels no guilt and like Mr Birling she tries to shift the blame onto every one else except herself. She said “ I think the person who is most to blame is the father of the child” she said that just before knowing that Eric her son was the father.
She speaks to the inspector as is he is a poor person as well and as if he has no right to be in to her house and start talking to the family like he is.
She talks to the rest of the family as if they should respect Arthur because of Arthur’s position and when Sheila and Eric back chat to Arthur Sybil tells them both off for disrespecting him.
At the end of the play she has learnt nothing at all and she does the exact same thing as Arthur, which is blame every one else.
Priestley presents the Inspector as god like because the Inspector is really the voice of Priestley trying to get his message across to the audience.
In the Inspectors final speech he says “ Eva Smith has gone but there are millions and millions of Eva Smiths still left with us”
Which Priestley tries to send the message across that even though they treated Eva badly it should not mean that they could do it again to someone else because it is happening every where and the next person you treat badly could end up just like Eva.
Priestley is trying to get the message across that even though the poor people are poor they are still people and well off people should be nice to the poor and make she they get the help they need.
I think that Sybil is the most to blame because she turned Eva away even though Eva was heavily pregnant and in desperate need of help.
Sybil did not give her money because Eva used Sybil’s own last name of “Mrs Birling” and Sybil said that Eva should get the father to pay for the baby as well as marrying her. Sybil did not know that her own son Eric was the father.
