Was this before or after they went under the apron? ;D
That said, I've seen a few bleeding noses from punches in the WWE.
in UK wrestling, punches are NOT pulled, but they are performed to do the least damage with as much illusion as possible.. maybe in a company like WWE which has shows 4 nights a week they tend to pull them more to keep the roster healthy as you say, but i feel the truth lies somewhere in the middle. i can tell you that every punch i've thrown has landed and likewise, every one thrown at me has landed as well and no-one has ever not been able to finish the match or had any kind of adverse reation at all.
Too many mistakes with proper timed punches and you've got a wrestler with a dislocated jaw/less teeth.
If you odn't bleive me watch them pull their punches when they're punching someone on the forehead whilst up on a turnbuckle: definately pulled punches without a doubt. They even do that kind of 'eeeesh' sound for some reason I can't comprehend, mabye they're actually resting and having a breather before the next flurry of moves.
you can cup your hand and try to strike the cheek area so it makes a good sound but doesn't hurt too much. or you can quickly spin your hand and hit them with the back of your hand instead, also a good sound. but with the pace of the action, you'll frequently get hit on the chin or side of the jaw and that DOES hurt.
another technique is to strike the top of the forehead and kind of "slide" across it to emphasise the follow-through. this doesn't hurt as you barely make contact, but it's a lot more likely to look really lame.
either way, punches, kicks and forearms are obviously not thrown full pelt at people, but they DO make contact and after a few, you'll definitely feel it :)
