You've got cyrstal balls?

How much did they cost?

Don't they make the old testes hang down a bit further.

There you go.

That the online adapter/HD would cost £100 to £150.

The adapter is $39 (which would be £39 here) and the HD went on sale in Japan for the equivalent of £100.

I also predicted a price-drop/bundle when GT3 was launched, and that PS2 would be around £200 at Xmas this year.

The only things I didn't see coming were that the online/HD capability would be two seperate units, and that Sony would offer those who pre-ordered the PS2 £10 back for buying GT3.

These crystal balls are fun!

It depends how far Sony are willing to go to maintain their market-leading position.

They won't do anything stupid, but they may have some surprises in store.

A drop to £199 is not out of the question, with a bundle containing the online adapter and HD coming later for £299 - the same price as Xbox.

I personally can't see the PS2 being £150 by next March time.

That's about sx months away.

Since the PS2 launch, the price has come down by £30.

It's not going to drop another £120 in 6 months.

Even in the 'Cube launch isn't 'til June, I still don't see the PS2 dropping that much in price in 9 months.

It *may* drop to £200, but even that I doubt.

I can see a drop to £250 before christmas, to try and get extra sales, but whether they then chop another £50 off the asking price, I personally doubt.

A lot of people will be annoyed if they pay £250 for something in mid-December, but then find out if they had waited 'til mid-January they could have got it for £200, they won't be happy bunnies.

Having said that, would Sony really care?

They'd have got the money out of people, and if it gets on the news due to lots of people complaing, would that also bother them?

They say that there's no such thing as bad publicity, so would Sony really mind? Every time the PS2 is mentioned on the news, it's free advertising.

And with the 'Cube launch pencilled in for spring 02 over here, I imagine they'd want as much publicity as possible after christmas.

If the PS2 went down to £150 I would get one for the DVD playters and MGS2

Do you mean in performance or price?

In terms of performance, I don't believe there's much between PS2 and Gamecube. One has an edge in some areas, the other is better in other areas. Any difference will be in the software - some prefer Nintendo's general line-up, others prefer Sony's.

If you're talking price, then I see the PS2 coming down to £175 to £199. For those who don't care about or are unaware of the technical side, a slightly higher price-point *can* provide psychological leverage. A lot of people think that 'you get what you pay for', and a marginally higher price can make people think they're getting better or more capable goods for not much more money.

If Sony really want to go for the throat, then they may well match the (proposed) £150 price tag. We'll only know when it happens.

And the bacwards-compatibility is another major factor. If a 'clueless' parent walks into a games shop to get a machine for the kids, they can often ask questions like (I've heard it myself) "what games are available" and "how much are they".

If a shop assistanr points out that there are "all these PS2 games at around £35, or all of THESE PSone games for around £20" then the parent may be swayed by that alone.

Of course, all this is speculation though, and therefore largely irrelevant! Buy you did ask how I saw things.
