Britain is on alert against the threat of terrorist attacks after the US faced its worse crisis since Pearl Harbour.
Planes due to fly to America have already been grounded and a decision to stop any aircraft taking off could follow.
'Security'
The London Stock Exchange and parts of Canary Wharf tower have both been evacuated. A stock exchange spokesman said: "In response to events unfolding in the US, the LSE is evacuating Exchange Tower as a precaution."
Downing Street said it was not evacuating and other Government departments are following suit.
But Foreign Secretary Jack Straw warned: "Alert states for Government buildings, civilian and military, have been raised in the UK.
"Alert states for diplomatic posts across the world have been raised to their highest level and we are issuing travel advice to all British citizens abroad to take great care if they are living abroad in sensitive areas, to stay in their compounds, to avoid obvious areas of potential risk and to have great care for their safety."
Threats
Scotland Yard said it was in constant touch with Government departments, but no threats against Britain had been received. A spokeswoman said: "We're aware of what's going on in America."
A spokesman for the Department of Transport said it was urgently reviewing the situation after jets were flown into the World Trade Center towers and the Pentagon.
He told Sky News Online that flights could be grounded to stop similar attacks on British buildings. The spokesman said: "We're considering all kinds of things. We're looking at the security situation."
Heathrow
The attacks were also being urgently reviewed at Heathrow, Britain's biggest airport.
A spokesman said: "We're actively looking at it. No decision has been made yet."
He added: "American airspace has been closed and flights to America have been grounded. There is disruption to flights to America and we expect substantial delays at Heathrow."
The Foreign Office has set up an emergency number for concerned relatives on 020 7008000.
I bet the effects after a day aren't the half of it!
This'll last for ages!
