GameCube pre-orders make it into the top five ranking of hardware sales in japan.
September 7, 2001
The Nikkei BP Network reports that Nintendo GameCube's pre-orders have entered the top five for hardware sales during the week of August 27 to September 2. Unfortunately no specific numbers were given, so we can't gauge whether this is a good or bad thing. The GameCube ranked as follows in sales:
1.) PlayStation 2 SCPH-35000
2.) Game Boy Advance
3.) PlayStation 2 SCPH-35000GT
4.) Dreamcast
5.) GameCube pre-orders
As you can see, the PlayStation 2 grabbed two spots with two separate models of the console. When we get solid sales numbers, you'll be the first to know. Until then, we advise you refrain from using this ranking as something glorious or terrible for GameCube.

This quite clearly states pre orders, and quite clearly shows the GC well below two versions of the Ps2, not to mention the GBA and Dreamcast, it also says, recommended not to be used as any sort of indicator on sales performance.
This represents that enough people have paid FULL CASH PRICE for a GAMECUBE a week before it's Japanese launch to get it into the top 5. And given that there are planety of units available, and pre-ordering isn't necessary it's quite a few 'sales' considering they won't get it for another week.
It will fly off the shelves on Friday.
Considering there was no sales figures supplied with the list, I don;t know how you can say that, and especially considering they split the PS2 into the old version and the new version, both of which are above the PS2.
