Think. After the next two generations of handhelds we may get Game Cube and PS2 quality games that we can play where ever we want. They'ed probably have to make the screen a bit bigger for the things in the distance to be recognisable. It could only be about 8 to 10 years away! The would be able to come up with some even greater ideas then.

Considering the size of the screen - you all seem to be missing the point. LCD screens can be huge - remembering laptops commonly have 15-inch screens. However, we are talking about a "handheld" console. How can you have a big screen and still have it handheld.

Come on! Use some imagination people. Where's the talk of headsets or projectors? Solid-state consoles in cars etc.

What we've got to ask really is what do we want from portable consoles? If we wanted detailed 3D graphics then we need crisp, clear screens that are maybe twice as big as at present. This could easily be achieved now, but at a cost. If we expect that the new LCD technologies could bring this cost down in as little as a year, then we've got to ask how big a contraption are we willing to cart around with us.

There's also the issue of lack of competition in the handheld market. Nintendo only developed the GBA because of the impending threat of the Wonderswan and the Neo-Geo Pocket. When this failed to have any impact on Nintendo's market they delayed the launch of the GBA for 12-18 months so that they could clear GBC stocks - there is no way they would have done this if the Wonderswan and Neo-Geo Pocket had took off.

Looking at the market now, what is there to push Nintendo? Who's going to make them roll out the barrel in the development of the GBA's successor? No one. Unless someone comes along soon Nintendo simply won't bother with updating their handheld hardware for a very long time - maybe 6 years. That's 50% more than it would take in the busy console market. I guess this could come from Sony, Microsoft or any new entrants, however who would want to go up against Nintendo? The Game Boy has dominated the market for such a time it would take a brave or reckless company to try and get a share of it.

Thescreen that is on the clipon to thePSone is reasonable, and (so I have heard) plays PS2 games fine. A screen that size could easily go onto a handheld the size of a discman, andwould play CD format too.

I should be an inventor! :D

No matter how the technology advances, handhelds will always be limited by one thing - the screen.

Graphically, you just can't get enough detail on a screen that size. Sure the resolutions will get higher, but that's only worth it to a point - too high a resolution at that size, and the human eye just can't see it.

In my view, there's no point making a system which you can connect to a larger screen because then you lose the portability and defeat the object of the machine.

Not specifically, but there's nothing to stop you using existing equipment to do it, by hooking up a flat screen monitor to your TV.

Pad with screen = LCD Flatscreen Monitor.

You just need a couple of extra cables and 'TV on PC' hardware and you're up and running.

Why hasnt anyone come up with a pad with a screen on it, that you can plug into your home system? You can easily get adaptors to run one from your car, and would be useful if the TV your console is plugged into is shared.

As well all know advances in technology and power advance all the time. I think Handhelds will get advances in the future but they are not to be taken to seriously by the companies.
