ALWAY's works, buyers see the "99p" and click straight onto your auction, once they are in, they'll bid. It's simple to be honest, it's just how our brain works, instead of going for something that seems to much, we go straight to the cheaper option thinking we'd get it cheap.
My Gamecube auction started at 99p - went for £80.
And the eBay fee's are nice n low with putting it at 99p.

Drop the price to £1 no reserve. That way you pay almost nothing for listing it, and you'll get whatever the market value is for it.
Good general rule for eBay is to start with the opening bid as £1. Lowers your listing fees and gets people bidding.
