The last level, the final challenge. All of your abilities you have learnt throughout the game are put to test here. They tend to be long; they tend to be hard and very, very FRUSTRATING.

The Final level is what the entire game is gearing you up for but it doesn’t always turn out to be good. Many a developer believes that throwing a load of near impossible enemies or to make you make a load of near impossible jumps is the best way to end a game. A good example of this is the disappointing final level in Castlevania. It all of course ends in an over powering final boss but again developers who fail to make a difficult final boss throw 2 or 3 at you.

Criticizing the final boss though is hard to do. Although Zelda Ocarina of Time uses 2 bosses it was to introduce you to the normal Zelda bad guy Gannon. Zelda also has a unique way to end a game, in order to force you to use every piece of equipment you have picked up Shigsy uses mini dungeons to make up the final level this idea is used successfully in both the N64 Zelda games and are smaller versions of dungeons you have encountered throughout the game.

Zelda isn’t the only game that has a brilliant end level I am now talking about Conker. Conker’s end level may be a little on the short side but it is utter brilliance. Chapter 9 Heist, a complete Matrix take out which involves you jumping from pillar to pillar in slow motion mowing bad guys down with Uzi’s memorable! And combined with an excellent end boss Conker’s final level is stuff of greatness.

I also loved the end section in Shadowman, 5 serial killers, a brilliant end boss, a load of violence, lots of action, a dash of comedy all combined together in one of the best ever final sections shame about the end sequence though.

Is the final level in a game important?

Well once you have completed the game it is the final level, which is what you will remember, and so this will determine how much you like the game (which might explain why I love Conker so much) and of course affects word of mouth one of the best form of advertisement. If you hate it you’ll let your friends know if you do you will recommend it. It is more important than some people think.

Just because the game is coming to an end it doesn’t mean developers should rush the final stages.

Here’s to the future

I hated Perfect Darks last levels, then again I just thought the whole Alien thing was a bit crappy.

I thought that Perfect Dark's last level was a bit of a disappointment.

Still, it wasn't bad and the final boss was fairly good.

Jet Force Gemini's end was absolutely brilliant.

You have to find every last secret and hostage to get there and after plowing through a level of the toughest giant Ants (not the weedy Playstation owning sort you find in this forum :-D) you finally make it to Mizar who is probably the toughest boss I've ever met.

Tough, skillful but very rewarding at the sametime.
