The last level, the final challenge. All of your abilities you have learnt throughout the game are put to test here. They tend to be long; they tend to be hard and very, very FRUSTRATING.

The Final level is what the entire game is gearing you up for but it doesn’t always turn out to be good. Many a developer believes that throwing a load of near impossible enemies or to make you make a load of near impossible jumps is the best way to end a game. A good example of this is the disappointing final level in Castlevania. It all of course ends in an over powering final boss but again developers who fail to make a difficult final boss throw 2 or 3 at you.

Criticizing the final boss though is hard to do. Although Zelda Ocarina of Time uses 2 bosses it was to introduce you to the normal Zelda bad guy Gannon. Zelda also has a unique way to end a game, in order to force you to use every piece of equipment you have picked up Shigsy uses mini dungeons to make up the final level this idea is used successfully in both the N64 Zelda games and are smaller versions of dungeons you have encountered throughout the game.

Zelda isn’t the only game that has a brilliant end level I am now talking about Conker. Conker’s end level may be a little on the short side but it is utter brilliance. Chapter 9 Heist, a complete Matrix take out which involves you jumping from pillar to pillar in slow motion mowing bad guys down with Uzi’s memorable! And combined with an excellent end boss Conker’s final level is stuff of greatness.

I also loved the end section in Shadowman, 5 serial killers, a brilliant end boss, a load of violence, lots of action, a dash of comedy all combined together in one of the best ever final sections shame about the end sequence though.

Is the final level in a game important?

Well once you have completed the game it is the final level, which is what you will remember, and so this will determine how much you like the game (which might explain why I love Conker so much) and of course affects word of mouth one of the best form of advertisement. If you hate it you’ll let your friends know if you do you will recommend it. It is more important than some people think.

Just because the game is coming to an end it doesn’t mean developers should rush the final stages.

Here’s to the future

It could be argued that Lawyers aren't human, so I'll have to think of another example... Doctors!

Hah, yes but you don't see a lawyer making you change your plea to guilty because they are getting tired towards the end of the case do you? Anyway, they do go back and forth from home to work like everyone else. Well most of them do.

Hey, we're all human, after all. Once the first game programming bots are made, then I'll be expecting better.

No, they can rest but they can't do sloppy work it's unprofessional. Also No I never sleep, I'm too busy playing games and writing on forums. It's not a good idea to finish what would have been a good game on a not so good note. If developers can make games like Baldur's Gate 2 good all the way through then they should all be able to do it or they just aren't putting the effort in.

But after making such a difficult game, surely they deseve a rest? Don't you have that feeling of tirednes when you're just about to finish something that you have worked hard on for a long time?

No, but most of the time they don't. In my experience anyway. Maybe they sometimes do it from end to beginning, or simultaneously. Like they do in films sometimes. Only a select few final levels of good games don't cut the muffin.

They shouldn't get lazy if a game is coming to an end.

Most final levels are good if the game is good. Half-Life had a rubbish lot of levels from the start to the finish of the alien world Xen. Then it had a rubbish end sequence when I completed them, so that was annoying. Black & White has a good final level, but then it's only level 5. Max Payne has an excellent final level, it's big and it's an excellent build up to the end. Plus it's where the game starts because the story starts at the end then goes back and continues from the point at the beginning of the game. Erm, understand? Anyway, it's a shame Max Payne is so short, but if it wasn't it would probably be too long, since you would run out of new ways to do things or new things to do. Great story, and many possibilities for great levels and mods to be made for it.

A final level has to be good, but for the game to be good it has to keep high quality gameplay from start to finish (and a good storyline and ending help too).
