Considering the amount of criticism levelled at our government by the press and public (and in these forums) about their handling of asylum seekers, what have they done to counteract this?

Allowed only 20 Albanians to come to the match tonight, and those 20 have to prove they have been to a previous World Cup related game and gone back home afterwards.

Now, it may just me being cynical, but haven't Albania been part of the World Cup for a while now?
And surely there's a difference between people coming to watch a football match and someone running through the channel tunnel?

"Government,you suck"
"No, look! We are allowing 20 fans to come to the football, we're controlling the asylum seekers! We are effective and bothered!"
"Um..what about the 150 every single night that come on the ferries and in boots of cars?"
"Shut up! Look how we control the football asylum seekers!"

Yeah right.
So 20 fans (there are more stewards than Albania fans tonight) because "Asylum seekers need to be controlled".
People fleeing from a country with a decent enough stability, no internal brutalisation and a football team?
I don't think so

Can we say "Manipulation of The Masses through Media"?
See how effective our government is by banning all but 20 football fans from watching their national team play.
Ok, so they do nothing about the flooding of the Chunnel and Ports but boy, do they got footie fans under control.

Shame they aren't so righteous when it comes to banning football hooligans from going abroad.
This is bullsheet

Wasn't that the other way around? I read on some paper today that only 20 albanian fans are coming over here, as the government fears they'll apply for asylum.

Everybody has the right to claim for asylum. The process can take up to a year and half to be investigaged and processed. During this period asylum seekers are not entitled to state benefits but will recived vouchers for food £30.00 a week I think. They will also be given temporary accomodation. If their request for Asylum is denied then they can be deported. Problem is that they usually disappear by this stage. Unlike France we don't have an identity card system to it is relatively easy to disappear here. However once you have disappeared you can't claim any benefits at all. Oh no that would be foolish and you would be deported if you turned up at a governmnet agency.

It seems everyone who asks

Theoretically every case in investigated, but it takes months and sometimes years, as the backlog is so huge.

So they can say yes, but it may be a long time after the fact when it doesn't matter anymore.
