Friday: Arrived in London for Gamers' Day 2003, plush hotel, remote control TV, toilet paper in the bathroom, the works.
Saturday: Played Killzone (not due out for a year) and a bunch of great games coming out just before Christmas, courtesy of Sony.
Sunday: Spent the day writing reviews of Gamers' Day for various sites and coping with a roaring hangover.
Monday: Hit level 23 in EverQuest and started to do my level 23 quests, which reward you with great new items and tons of experience points.
Tuesday: Completed my level 23 quests, hit level 24 and won a free copy of Virtua Fighter Evolution, again courtesy of Sony.
Wednesday: Receive an e-mail from the staff writing team at Sony asking me if I'd like to write a regular EverQuest column for Central Station, the online hub of the PS2 online network.
Thursday: Get confirmation that the article I fired off for the first column is fine, it'll be up there sometime in the next week, would I mind sending them more articles every week to a fortnight from now on?
How can I beat a week like this? (Apart from the hangover).
They know my e-mail addy from the forums or the beta tests.
They know I like EQ because I tend to spam all their forums about how great it is :)
See? Spam IS useful :)
To be honest, I think how it worked was this. I've written a lot of posts for Sony's forums over the last year, most of it constructive feedback or raving about great games that are out, so they've read a lot of it and thought they'd like to meet me to see if I could be of more use. So they wangled it for me to go to Gamers' Day to meet them last week. They then rigged the VF4 competition as a sweetner, and next day asked me to write a few EverQuest articles for them. What they didn't say was they wanted a photo of me to go with the article so they could do a bit of Photoshop on it and turn me into an Elf, but I guess you gotta take the rough with the smooth :)
Call me a cynic, but maybe that's how they worked it. Alternatively it could all be completely coincidental, but I figure Sony are staffed with a lot of clever people.
Either way, I think it's a good arrangement. Sony are happy as they've got me writing free content for them (I say 'free', I'm told there's 'perks' like the odd free game thrown my way, but I'd happily do it for love anyhow), and I'm happy as:
a) My articles get a wide audience, you never know who might be reading them, I might get more offers from other parties
b) I'm doing what I love to do, write about games
c) I get to rave about EverQuest Online Adventures
d) It's good content for my C.V. :)
Ehhhhmmmm, did you win VF4 for hitting level 24 in EQ?
How did Sony know your e-mail address?
How did they know you were so keen on EQ?
> Oh, and how does Killzone play?
Think about your most anticipated game ever.
Now triple the anticipation.
Just how many reviews did you write for other sites? And are they the regular sites such as gamespot, ign etc?
Oh, and how does Killzone play? Framerate, on screen action, AI?
Go 'Meister! It's ya birthday!
Go 'Meister! It's ya birthday!
You lucky mucker!
Sounds like a pretty fine week to me. Just be careful 'fate' doesn't have a nasty sting in the tail for you!
