But first a lesson in sequels:
A Sequel isn’t a bad thing. The Release of a sequel lets us re-visit old territory and enjoy another adventure of a well known and best loved character. What would happen if Shigsy never made another Mario game after Donkey Kong? Hard to imagine especially as the franchise has created so many ideas such as the Platform genre itself and made so many people happy.
But Sequels can get silly, 5 Tomb Raider games on the same console!!!! So lets go to this extreme what if Shigsy only ever made Mario games? No Lylat Wars, Wave Race, F Zero, Zelda, Pikmin, Metroid and so many more. Developers need to create more than one game to create variety and gain experience.
Most Sequels can be identified by the use of a similar name to its Prequel such as WWF, Pokémon and the Legend of Zelda and also by the use of numbers such as Final Fantasy 7, Resident Evil 3 and Metal Gear Solid 2. Both of these Properties features in the name Playstation 2.
Along with the most hyped games being GT3, MGS2, GTA3 and Smackdown it is understandable that people view the Playstation 2 as a “sequel console”. But of course it isn’t, with games such as Timesplitters, Red Faction and Devil May Cry it is apparent that the Playstation 2 isn’t a “sequel console.”
So what’s the problem?
Well like Nintendo’s childish image Playstation 2’s Sequel Image will effect how the average Joe on the street views it. If people believe the Gamecube with its Lego brick look is only for kids then they won’t get it. Likewise if someone likes variety or to try something new and he or she believes the PS2 to be a sequel console then they won’t get one.
Also Nintendo this false image is hard to shake, Sony could try hyping up non-sequels such as Devil May Cry rather than Smackdown 3, which will sell well anyway due to the success of its prequel. I think it is time the public views a console for what is really is.

Just as in films, a sequel can be an excellent thing, but it has to be treated as a seperate entity to the original, sometimes only having a tenous link to its past. You mention Tomb Raider, but if the programmers got their fingers out and did some work, the next game could be a wonderful experience. It could be another Deus Ex, but somehow I think they will just try to continue riding the coat-tails of the Tomb Raider franchise.
Sony have created a new console, but they are now feeling the backlash from a frenzied media campaign, which included many stories of their success with the first Playstation, so it's only to be expected that people will mention how much of a sequel machine the PS2 seems.
