Some of you may remember FrEaK oF tHe DaRk’s post ‘Playstation 2 it’s all in the name’ a well written post about the Playstation 2 being a sequel console. It was heavily criticized but I think there was an element of truth in what FrEaK oF tHe DaRk wrote.

But first a lesson in sequels:

A Sequel isn’t a bad thing. The Release of a sequel lets us re-visit old territory and enjoy another adventure of a well known and best loved character. What would happen if Shigsy never made another Mario game after Donkey Kong? Hard to imagine especially as the franchise has created so many ideas such as the Platform genre itself and made so many people happy.

But Sequels can get silly, 5 Tomb Raider games on the same console!!!! So lets go to this extreme what if Shigsy only ever made Mario games? No Lylat Wars, Wave Race, F Zero, Zelda, Pikmin, Metroid and so many more. Developers need to create more than one game to create variety and gain experience.

Most Sequels can be identified by the use of a similar name to its Prequel such as WWF, Pokémon and the Legend of Zelda and also by the use of numbers such as Final Fantasy 7, Resident Evil 3 and Metal Gear Solid 2. Both of these Properties features in the name Playstation 2.

Along with the most hyped games being GT3, MGS2, GTA3 and Smackdown it is understandable that people view the Playstation 2 as a “sequel console”. But of course it isn’t, with games such as Timesplitters, Red Faction and Devil May Cry it is apparent that the Playstation 2 isn’t a “sequel console.”

So what’s the problem?

Well like Nintendo’s childish image Playstation 2’s Sequel Image will effect how the average Joe on the street views it. If people believe the Gamecube with its Lego brick look is only for kids then they won’t get it. Likewise if someone likes variety or to try something new and he or she believes the PS2 to be a sequel console then they won’t get one.

Also Nintendo this false image is hard to shake, Sony could try hyping up non-sequels such as Devil May Cry rather than Smackdown 3, which will sell well anyway due to the success of its prequel. I think it is time the public views a console for what is really is.

Here’s to the Future

I don't think Dringo called the PS2 a sequel Console i believe he is talking about the image of the system. The PS2 sounds like a sequel console and with the major titles all sequels he says it seems one, but isnt it is a new twist on the Childish idea showing Nintendo aren't the only one with a problem.

I won a game for calling the PS2 a sequel a few months back.

And right I was too :-)

Sony's sequel image and Nintendo's childish one is the image that repels sony fans and Sonys sequel image has rejected nintendoids.

well done Dringo for spotting the problem Sony faced nice and un biased!

Yes but it is an image thing it is out of Sonys hands with that but they need to help alter the look.

Its not a sequel Station, I know that, atleast so far.
Its Third parties greed that was the cause of the annual sequels for the PS1.
And now its going to happen to PS2.
Fifa and SSX are prime examples of the corporate greed of EA.
Soon others will follow.
And now because Gamecube will be more popular than what the N64 ever was, we will see the same happening on it as well.
Its not a good thing for us the gamers, its just a money racket for dumb casual gamers who are new to the console scene.

Well, I think that a lot of developers are caching in on the success of old franchises on the new console, which is not a bad thing. As for the Tomb Raider thing, that's beyond Sony;s control. If Eidos were developing for the N64, they would have done exactly the same thing, just like EA do year after year after year...

Don't forget, the only official sequels being released on the PS2 are GT3 and WipEout Fusion. All the rest is totally new stuff. If I flick through my ten games, only 2 are sequels, so you can hardly call it a SequelStation.

And the Nintendo Sequels are radically different as they arent released every Christmas, year after year.
When was the last Mario game (i.e a true Mario platformer?) ...ill tell you: 5 YEARS AGO.

It might not be a sequel console, but it has its fair share of them.
The PS2 is a big let down for me, its a shame though as im a huge PS1 fanatic.
