LOL! n00b :)

Obviously helps if you know people who play then, much like any on-line game.

No, you seem to be missing the point that in order to level up in such a way, you need to FIND people willing to help in that respect in the first place. When I was involved, all you got would be a few people of similar or lower level asking to clan up and go hunting, only for them to completely miss the point of co-operating and run off in the middle of fights to kill some pathetic rat so that they could gain 2xp and returning in time to watch the one or two people who stayed to fight die and suffer experience penalties.

Loads of people complain of that and plainly miss the point of co-operative play. Leveling up can be done very quickly if you have a stong player to help you. For example, in Asheron's Call I joined late and was significantly below the rest of my mates in terms of level. So I went hunting with one guy who showed me the best places to level up quickly and because I had someone who could get me out of trouble I could go in for tougher fights. Also, he dumped all his old armour/weapons/potion/etc on to me that helped. That'll get you up through the first few levels. Then, a better player used magic to make my character stronger/more skilled etc with "buffs" (short bursts of skill improvements), this allowed me to fight enemies leagues too powerful for me normally, but with the buffs and constant healing I was rocketing in level.

After a couple of hours at the basic level, you just go on missions with your clan and take the bits you can manage. You're leveling up without even thinking aobut it. You know, fun.

The problem with most of thse games (and especially Camelot) was that too much time is spent vacuously running around trying to level up.

I had a go on the 7-day trial for Earth & Beyond, attempted to have a go of the 7-day trial for planetside and spent quite a bit of time on the Neocron BETA. Perhaps not experience enough, but they failed to convince me that they where worthy of full time investment.

Exactly, and I'd have to say I'd prefer crisps to fishing anytime, although unlike MMORPG,s I haven't been fishing before. I have had experience with these types of games in the past, enough to know that I just don't like them, they don't offer me the same entertaining time I'd have with a single player RPG, hence the reference to Rebublic.

Funny you should mention that - amazingly, you don't just talk to the first person that you stumble across. Well, I suppose you could, but if they're annoying/stupid/Welsh/etc then you can move on. Or, as I did, meet up with people you already know either from forums/IRC/real life (!) as well as unknowns.

You’ll also find your average MMORPG person is a lot more pleasant than your average DEATH MATCH SUPAR FIGHTEING INERNAT DATA COMPUTAR GAME XIVVM 2003 player. Horrible generalization, I know, but from my experience it’s true.

And yet.. the game still relies on NPCs to carry the game forward. The "commuity atmosphere" could eailly be recreated on LAN, and, in a few years time, by AI.

Besides, as a member of the online gaming community, I can tell you now that the thought of having lengthy interactions with millions of retarded children that can barely speak english yet are somehow able to use a mouse/keyboard combination really doesn't turn me on as much as you might think.

The two are completely incomparable in any real sense. Comparing an MMORPG to any other sort of game is like comparing fishing to eating some crisps. You may enjoy both, or one or the other; but saying "what are you doing fishing when you could be eating crisps" is silly.

The on-line aspect IS the game. The friendly community is a huge part of why MMORPG-ing is a pleasant way to pass time.
