Anyone here think that Star Trek is good? No, didn't think so. Anyways onto my topic. Before I start I wish to say that in no way is this topic meant to start a console wars arguement and if it does I accept no responsability for it. Okay, now all thats out of the way I will begin.

In the gaming world I would say there is 3 or 4 sets of different gamers. Set one, the "Nintys". Nintys are people who are loyal to Nintendo. Constantly arguing why Niuntendo don't mae childish games they worship Shigeru Miyamoto. Set 2, the Sonyphiles. To these people number of sequels is irrelevant. Sonyphiles tend to know what they are talking about and rarely back down from an arguement. Set 3 is a breed of gamer that is struggling to survive, the Sega gamers. With their console not being made anymore they arwe in hard times. To these people quality games and this alone is everything. Now we have set 4, the PC gamers. A USB keyboard and mouse means the worl to these people as they tend to be FPS fanatics. Mention the words Counter Strike and c@*p in the same sentence and you had better write your will.

Of course there is one more set of gamer. These people are known as "non-biased gamers". Rarely seen in the wild they are very rare and practically impossible to find. To these people, wo made a console means nothing, quality games are what they seek and they will buy whatever console they think they will find them on. These are the people who won't know what next gen console to buy, unlike their other gaming counter parts.

I am sure what I have said so far hasn't came as a surprise to anyone. So far you are probably don't rerally know what the point of this topic is. Not making sense is something I seem to have mastered since I came to these forums so I guess I had better explain.

Out of the groups I have mentioned I am sure you know which category you fall under. Myself? I am a "Ninty" *God I hate that name*. BUt the question I ask you is have you/will you always be seen like this. Nintys won't always be Nintys and it is the same for everyone else. People tastes change and as a result the consoles people choose to buy change as well.

When I was five i got my first console, it was a Super Nintendo. I was very happy with it and enjoyed playing the games. After a few years you will all know that the Playstation came along. To be honest back then I didn't notice the difference in the styles of games the Snes and the PSX had. After being thoroughly impressed by the Snes all I wanted was the N64.

When it was finally released I wasn't too happy when the price tag read "£250". I knew my wallet wasn't going to stretch that far, but totally out of the blue it was cut again to £150. Now I was getting excited, I realised that 64 bit power was within my reach. "Oh my giddy aunt!" *MJ wets himself with excitement* "I can get it for £150 with Mario 64!" The next thing you see is an MJ shaped cloud of dust left by me rushing off to buy the console of my dreams.

Once again Nintendo had served me well, a machine capable of matching and then surpassing the brilliance that was the Snes. After a few years of owning this great machine I couldn't help but notice some of the games onn the other side of the fence. I began to get wind of Metal Ger Solid and Final Fantasy 8 and I couldn't help but feel interested. Eventually I just cut the mustard and went to my mates house to play on them. FF8 blew me away, MGS blew me away and brought me back again. I was beginning to feel the strain of my loyalty to Nintendo.

Well here I am, another Playstation has been released, I din't break under the strain, I held strong. I sit here staring at my dusty N64 and wonder if it was worth it, right now with new releases thyin on the ground I am not sure, but when that brand spanking new GAMECUBE is under my TV it will be a different story.

Yes, it's always a good idea to investigate games in a magazine or on the internet before buying them. Dirt cheap eh? Is that free only then? Or do you mean low priced, like £10. I can sell you some dirt for less than that. Or more if you'd prefer in which case dirt aint cheap.

I will play anything once as well, but I will not buy anything unless I am sure of it being top quality, unless it is dirt cheap of course.

Oh and I do like Star Trek, but each series for different reasons. First series is funny in how ridiculous it can be and who wouldn't laugh at Spock and Scotty and the fatman Kirk beating up fitter looking aliens. The Next Generation has some comedy in it, the best captain (not that that's saying anything, they are the worst member of every crew), interesting stories that occasionally tackle real world issues or are just for fun even if they are unlikely (within the next 500 years at least, well 300 maybe). Deep Space Nine has many redeeming qualities, more comedy than TNG, better stories around a more centralised area, allowing you to learn more about the characters and see how they develop in a home setting. DS9 does have the disadvantage of the single worst captain, he is overly obsessed with rascism and how "his people" were mistreated some 300 or so years ago (he's black by the way), he's almost rascist himself sometimes, but manages to avoid the line (so far anyway, the last series is still being shown on terrestrial TV). Voyager is similar to DS9, it lacks any character opposition like Quark and Odo in DS9 but it does have several good well developed characters in it. It probably has the best jokes in it thanks mostly to a new Vulcan named Tuvok (who was in one of the films actually, as the same character I think, but still), an ex borg named Seven of Nine (That's the shortened version too, mostly people shorten it even more to Seven) and a holographic doctor. Voyager really takes advantage of the different cultures, Seven's lack of experience in a society, the doctor's learning to become more than just a hologram to both make good storylines and good jokes. Voyager has had a couple of dodgy characters, the captain is a bit too moral and has a very "holier than thou" attitude and there was Kes who was barely a character at all (luckilly she's gone now, and apparently the captain might be gone in the future). Let's hope the next Star Trek continues the tradition of good all round entertainment. You should give Star Trek a try, watch more than one episode of each series and you should take a liking to one. Maybe waiting for the next series so that you can understand everything from the start would be a good idea. Make sure you watch more than one episode as there are occasional ones that just don't deserve to be shown. Anyway, I hope that one day the false stereotype of Star Trek viewers goes away and allows people to enjoy Star Trek for what it is without having to worry about being insulted for being a geek or somesuch. Star Wars doesn't suffer this after all, and neither it should. Live Long and Prosper. Just kidding.

If your looking for an unbiased gamer, you have found one. ME! I will play anything once.

And Star Trek isn't really that bad.

You should have used a joke that said you would be assimilated into the Sony collective. Still, you missed that one, it's long gone. Anyway I play PC games but don't really like Counter-Strike enough to play it, I own an N64 but only because it has a more unique selection of games from those that I get on my PC, so what does that make me? The reason I didn't get a Dreamcast or Playstation was because I couldn't afford more than one console (looking forward to maybe getting both Gamecube and X-Box in the future). Well that was one reason, another was because the Nintendo games tend to have a more unique style, which is where the idea that they are childish games arises from. Sony and Sega both bring good games, but most of them are similar to the sort of games you get on a PC and I already had a PC so I thought an N64 would be better. I also liked the idea of the Goldeneye type multiplayer, now that may be available on other consoles now but it wasn't on release of the N64. Another thing is the emphasis on fighting games made for the Playstation, I'm not a big fan of fighting games except for wrestling so that didn't take my interest. Racing games are similar but I do like a racing game like Mario Kart which let's you use weapons and such to make it more challenging (who needs realism anyway). I played Resident Evil and that's not a very good game in my view so if it's the sort of games you get on the Playstation then I don't want it. Metal Gear Solid may have taken my attention but 1 game isn't enough and it was too little too late.

So here I am now, still with my N64 and PC, looking for something new perhaps to replace the N64. Not sure if I'd prefer the X-Box or the Gamecube, the PS2 will no doubt be replaced soon so I would rather leave that one for the PS3. Luckily I may not have to choose, as my brother might get one while I get the other. If it does come down to a choice it will be quite difficult though. Halo versus Mario really, not as easy as it sounds since Halo will be coming out on the PC but it wont have the multiplayer on one machine.

The trouble is, is that to be into all the games, you really have to have (or have access to) all the consoles, which is too expensive.

I used to be like that, when I owned a Snes, MD, Amiga, and then bought a PS1. After getting the ps, I diddnt really play the other machines, as the games were far better (imo) than on the other machines. I sometimes played on the others, but more for novelty value.

When the N64 and DC were released I was interested in getting the machine, but the costs would be too high. £250 for a console was a hell of a lot when I was at school! Just as I thought about getting another machine, another great game would come out on the PS and I would get the game instead. I always felt that however much I wanted a new machine, the one that I allready had was perfectly adequete.

As I loved my PS1 so much I instantly thought of the PS2 for the next machine. Not because I was a sonyphile, or had any biased against the other machines, as I had played them at my friends. I was happy with my PS1, and liked the games.

I always try and keep an eye on the other machines, the GC and (admitting in shame) the X-Box is looking tasty, but the initial cost is the killer, and for me to spend that kind of money again after my £300 PS2 episode, the games are going to have to be great. "Yeah, they will be" say all the Nintys, but I am not in a position financially to afford another box under the telly.

Was that sarcasm goaty? To be hponest I can't ever tell with you. Anyways I don't mind not being taken seriously sometimes, but when I bother to type out a reasonably long topic and no one actually takes the time to read it other than the first line it is very annoying.
