I know there are a lot of geforce cards out now, they all have the same sort of specs but which one out performs the rest? can ye tell me?

Yeah but very expenisve ! 350 quid almost, and don't forget you might need AGP 4x support.
The next Radeon card looks impressive, it should be out soon.
You have to have some sort of video card to output a signal to the monitor, most PCs wont boot without one, just protest and beep at you a bit.
can a PC run without a video card or do I need to buy an 8mb version until I can buy the 3d card?

Out of the lateast generation of GeForce3s, there isn't really one card (yet) which clearly outperforms the rest. I went for the 64mb Asus V8200 deluxe, around 67fps in UT, highest detail, 1600x1200. Also has tv in/out, which I never use, but increases the value of the card when selling it second hand..
