Ok, I’ll keep my tone neutral for this topic and just ask a question:

Anyone see the refugees making a gang-bust entrance to the Channel Tunnel on the news? 150 charging down the tunnel and towards England.
Quote from the MP for Dover “The French are treating them deliberately badly and positioning the camp so near as to all but send them over themselves”

My question, as raised by the MP is this:

Why, if you flee your homeland from oppression and brutality, do you then travel 400-500 miles across Europe to England, when surely as soon as you have left your country, you are safe?
The MP called it “Asylum shopping, not asylum seeking. They are already in a free and sympathetic country, why then push on to England?”
Why not stay in France, where you are not being a victim of whatever drove you from your home?
Why cross hundreds of miles of free, democratic countries to get to England.
If life is so harsh, surely anywhere is better than where you left?

I don’t get it.

The whole refugee thing is an emotive issue to to put it mildy. There was an Afgahn guy trying to get through the chunnel being interviewed on Radio 4 this morning. When asked why Britain he said "because I hear your people are tolerant and merciful." I just thought yeah if I had to live with the Taliban in Afghanistan I'd get the hell out and go to some place that is tolerant and relatively prosperous.
And despite what an awful lot of people think Britain is a relatively stable and tolerant country. Unlike some of our European neighbours we are a cosmopolitan country with a history of immigrants. Now what would you go for. London/British City or a smaller far more traditional and homogenous town in Germany/France? Yes the refugees are seeking economic security but also I think fundamentally they want tolerance and not to be persecuted and harrassed.
The whole debate about genuine or economic refugees is to an extent null and void. People are going to go where they think they will have a comftable and secure existence. Everyone wants the best for themselves and their children. This isn't restricted to those living in the affluent west.
Europe can continue to build its fortress but this won't stop people from continuing to try and enter illegally. We need to find a balance between protecting our interests and those of the refugees. Demonising them isn't going to help the process. In terms of the long term answers I don't know. I just know our current policy is unworkable. Desperate people will try desperate measures to get a better life for themselves.

Yeah!
And then we can go after fat people!
And then ones with glasses!
Or ones that are too short!
And then the ones that read books and don't believe in everything we tell them to!

Dangerous sentiments being echoed here people, let's be careful eh?

Apparently someone suggested this:

Shoot them when they are caught and place the bodies outside the tunnel medieval style as a warning to others.

This as i said was not my idea but it is a little over the top i think.

I suggest twin machine-gun nests - one on either side of the Chunnel - at our end, manned 24 hours a day. That'll stop the blighters!
