£300 - heard recently there being a "280 price tag

But yes, your cousin is right! £300 looks about right (although since the xbox doesn't play DVD films as standard it would not supprise me if they sold it for £250... although it's unlikely)
As for selling it at a loss... ALL consoles do this! The companies who make them, make profit on games.
EXAMPLE: You buy the latest colour printer for £200. It actually costs £400 to make. HOWEVER the printer ink is soooo overprissed that EPSON (or whoever) make the profit that way!)
