I bought Fifa 2001 for my Ps2, my first game, it took about 2 hours of play to get over the new graphics and realise that not much had changed for a number of years. It's just not football. Pinball anyone?
I'm with Pro Evo on this one, can't wait!
Keep watching the demo, drooling, waiting, come on Konami put us out of our misery!
After spending a while checking out some movies for WWF Smackdown: JBI, which looks very, very good, I decided to make my way back to the land of 'proper' sport and see exactly what EA had planned for the latest in a long line football follies in the shape of FIFA 2002.
As I mentioned, I hate football games. I suppose I should justify this, so here's why; They don't come anywhere near simulating the sport of Football, I might as well be playing Sensible Soccer. The FIFA franchise holds a special place in the pit of my stomach, solely for this reason. All EA's other sports titles are great simulations of the sport they model, why does the Soccer/Football one have to suck so abysmally?'
Of all the EA sports titles the FIFA lot is probably the most guilty of that often levelled charge of just tweaking the same game every year and re-releasing, with a title reflecting the Cup being played for at the time. Other than the expected graphical advancements and a varying commentary team, you're pretty much going to get the same old thing thrown at you. So I approached EA's website with a sense of pessimistic gloom purveying.
I have to admit though, if EA have pulled of what they claimed to have incorporated into the game then this may well be the first FIFA title that I ever buy.
A major rethink of the gameplay has been carried out (allegedly), with an all new passing system to get things going at last. From the demo I saw players will make intelligent runs and call for the ball, directing you as to where your computerised team mates want the ball played to. This is indicated on the pitch by a ghost like line that appears in the direction said team mate is running, then it's up to you to play the pass at the right time with the right amount of accuracy, in an attempt to spring the offside trap and get you clear. Though this sounds like the through ball pass from ISS fame, it accomplishes a lot more than just pushing the ball in front of a player and letting him go for it, it can be used effectively in any part of the field, picking up wingers running into space for example.
I always felt that the passing method was the greatest weakness the FIFA titles; Passes just zipping to feet with the push of a button, then some fancy trick or speed burst to get you into a scoring position. Hopefully, this new passing method with add a much needed touch of realism to a game that sorely needs it. Unfortunately, EA have stated that there will be no 'Franchise' option available, though the wording suggested that though it was not included this year, it may well be a possibility for later versions, which of course there will be. I really feel that the first console football game that accomplishes this will have a huge advantage in the market.
I also feel that, with FIFA 2002 we'll have an opportunity to see how software developers have progressed on a second generation PS2 title. With new consoles, gamers are prepared to allow developers a chance to get things right, as they learn how to get the most out of new hardware. So have EA taken this opportunity to provide us with a Football game that does the PS2 justice?
Their other sports titles are coming round for 2002 release soon as well, so I guess we'll see how things have progressed soon enough.
