Here is a review from this site:

Up until three years ago most people in Western Europe would not have heard of Final Fantasy. Although six games had been released in Japan it was decided that the western world would not understand Japanese role-play games. However import copies sold in America made Square (Final Fantasy's developers) decide to risk a western release of Final Fantasy VII, the first to appear on PlayStation. Final Fantasy VII surpassed everyone's expectations and not only out sold all the other 1997 Christmas releases but also out sold every PlayStation game released previously.

Final Fantasy VIII was released 18 months laterand in its first two weeks Final Fantasy VIII grossed more than the Hollywood blockbuster Titanic did in the same time span. The graphics of the eighth game in the series were breath taking. They took a step away from the larger, cartoony graphics of VII and went for a more realistic approach. It too sold by the bucketload. The stage for Final Fantasy IX was well and truly set by its release in Japan a few months ago. The release coincided with Sony Japan's launch of the new PSOne. Almost every new PSOne sold in Japan had a copy of Final Fantasy IX sold with it.

Final Fantasy IX has gone back to the cartoony style graphics of FFVII, although that's not to say they are still not stunning. The rendered sequences are as lush as before and the backgrounds are equally beautiful. The characters are quirkier though, which fits back in to earlier FF games. Again the music is outstanding with a soundtrack CD already released in Japan.

So what's it all about? Well like before it's different characters and a different world etc. etc. It's all set on Gaia , a world divided into four major ruling kingdoms. You play Zidane, a common thief who lives in Linblum - a once peaceful town, now under the attack of the evil Queen Brahne ruler of neighbouring Kingdom Alexandria. The ruler of Linblum hires Zidane to kidnap Princess Garnet (Brahne's daughter) to use as a bargaining tool in order to cease the attacks. Garnet however is fully aware that her mother is bonkers and decides to join Zidane's posse of her own free will in order to stop her mother's quest for power. Brahne responds to the kidnapping by sending a horde of rampaging bearded old men, commonly known as wizards in order to crush Linblum. Confused? Relax, its not all bonkers storylines.

There are many new features in FFIX, as well as old classics. Firstly the sub games are back in abundance. Remember the Chocobo racing in FFVII? Well there's a load to keep you occupied in IX. There's a parcel delivery game, a cooking game and the popular FFVIII card game, Triple Triad, is still there to win those valuable cards and gain extra help in your fight. The battle system has also changed slightly. You can now have up to four characters in a fight at a time as opposed to the limit of three previously. It is set up quite cleverly as two lines. The two fore fighters have more strength in their attacks and the rear two are the polar opposite. This allows some freedom with how you plan to take on those big bosses.

Magic points have made a return - this means that only certain types of spells and Guardian Forces can been used until you gain magic experience points. Square have opted for a far more role-playing style by having different types of characters. Whereas the heroes of FFVII & FFVIII only differed mildly in speed or overall attacking strength, FFIX offers up characters like Vivi, a black mage who is far better at casting magic but has less physical attack and defence strength. This gives you the option to maybe put him at the back of the action and protect him so he can use continuous magic attacks and revive the rest of your party. All of the characters in FFIX have different strengths and weaknesses like this and these are referred to in the game as 'class'. For example the main character, Zidane, is thief class, which means he can use the 'steal' ability.

FFIX looks wonderful and plays like a dream. Square have worked hard to make this the best Final Fantasy game so far especially as it's the last on PlayStation One. If RPGs are your thing then this game should sit proudly at the top of your collection. If it's not then the Final Fantasy series really is a good place to start to get in to it. After all we all have to start somewhere - why opt for shallow games when you can dive straight in to the beautiful clear waters of the deep end. A classic, in the true sense of the word.
