Well, I won a DVD (WAYHAY!!!) but I haven't got a DVD player, so I think we'll have to add it to the list (roll on payday!).

Which are better, standalone DVD players or PC based DVD players??

When I say PC based, I'm looking at a Samsung 16x drive and a Real Magic decoder card. All this for the convinving fee of £95.

What do ya reckon??

The PS2 is actually one of the cheapest DVD players for its quality.

Standalone, definitely. Infinitely higher quality.

Plus, you can move about a normla DVD Player from room to room, or house to house. I've got a DVD Built into my PC, watched two DVD Films, and it's no where near as great sitting in a PC-style Desk Chai than A Sofa :o).

Not to mention if your PC has a pretty loud Fan.... that really does get anoying after 3 seconds.

So, get a Stand-Alone DVD, or if you have the Cash, a DVD/Video unit in one, :o).

Most DVD-ROM drives come with software decoders, and as long as your PC is fast enough, it'll work without a dedicated decoder card.

But the quality is not great.

Definitely go for a 'proper' DVD player.

If you get a PC dvd, you'll have to start up your pc every time to watch a dvd, and youll have to sit at your desk, and youll have to muck around loads to get it going. adding cards and software and so on.

If you get a standalone, you'll be able to watch it on your big telly, in the comfort of your armchair, with the sound coming from your home stereo. No software installing, bigger tvs are cheaper than bigger monitors, itll be a lot nicer.

you can get a standalone dvd player from argos for £99, though spend as much as you can afford, itll be better in the long run. Make sure you get multi region though, so you can get US stuff cheap off the net before the UK release. Make sure your PC one is multi region before you get it also.

Get a standalone player.

I won a DVD the other day as well, and I've got the same problem, but a proper DVD player seems better to me.

You can watch them downstairs on your telly for start!
