Well, Nintendo came out with some new ideas, a different style for Zelda, a new Mario game that doesn't quite resemble other previous ones, even a different shaped box! They made sure that only the top quality titles would be available at launch, even going so far as to launch with less of their own games (although more third party software will be available at launch as well)
Did everyone give them a chance? Nope, the derision and insults came thick and fast, "why the stupid design?", "argh! You've altered Zelda!", "Nintendo are daring to be different, lynch them." Well, sorry, but it seems to me that Nintendo have made all the right decisions. Sony and Microsoft have stayed with what they see as a stable set of ideals, and that's fine for the type of people they are aiming at, the general market and stable people who don't want change.
Of course, this is only my own humble opinion, and many may still disagree, but this is the way I feel. Give them a break and sit back to await the launch. Nintendo add a different mix to the games industry at present, this is A GOOD THING.
Thank you!
I don't know where I get 'R' from, maybe that was the old rating system...

Slight correction here, the X-Box uses the following Esrb Rating System:
Early Childhood
Titles rated "Early Childhood (EC)" have content that may be suitable for children ages three and older and do not contain any material that parents would find inappropriate.
Kids to Adults
Titles rated "Kids to Adult (K-A)" have content that may be suitable for persons ages six and older. These titles will appeal to people of many ages and tastes. They may contain minimal violence, some comic mischief (for example, slapstick comedy), or some crude language.
Everyone
As of January 1, 1998, the new "Everyone" designation will replace the "Kids to Adults" rating. Titles rated "Everyone (E)" have content that may be suitable for persons ages six and older. These titles will appeal to people of many ages and tastes. They may contain minimal violence, some comic mischief (for example, slapstick comedy), or some crude language.
Teen
Titles rated "Teen (T)" have content that may be suitable for persons ages 13 and older. Titles in this category may contain violent content, mild or strong language, and/or suggestive themes.
Mature
Titles rated "Mature (M)" have content that may be suitable for persons ages 17 and older. These products may include more intense violence or language than products in the Teen category. In addition, these titles may also include mature sexual themes.
Adults Only
Titles rated "Adults Only (AO)" have content suitable only for adults. These products may include graphic depictions of sex and/or violence. Adults Only products are not intended to be sold or rented to persons under the age of 18.
Rating Pending
Product has been submitted to the ESRB and is awaiting final rating.
Currently there are a higher proportion of AO and M ratings than there are T, E, K-A and C ratings, hinting that the X-Box is being aimed at a mature audience.
WTF is a
> Back Button.
The Back Button on the X-Box is used in the same way as the B button on the Dreamcast to go 'back' through menus, just like a normal cancel key.
It's also used for going back a page when surfing on the internet with the X-Box, hence the reason why it is called 'Back'.
It [ The X-Box] therefore seems to me to be aimed at the 20+ group, and from the titles listed so far, there's a large proportion of 'R'rated games in there.
And do you know what the 'R' stands for? RENTAL! Meaning the games will be so short and easy to coplete that you'll only need to rent them once!
Tha X-Box makes me laugh. I mean look at it, it's way too big and what REALLY made me laugh was the controller. I mean those Black and White buttons above-right of the A-B-X-Y Buttons are a joke, they clash like mad, they're our of place and they're probably a waste of space for the amount of time the gamers use them.
Also, WTF is a Back Button. It's always been select, and any decent games knows that you can easily, and very effectively, use the 'B' Button (Nintendo) or '' Button (PSX/2) to go back and the 'X' button on the X-Box could do the same.
I would have thought that Microsoft would be going for decent looks because their games and machine will be of lower quality than Nintendo's.
Obviously I was wrong...
Also, the controller is a basic rip-off of the other controllers all rolled into one. DC: Triggers - PSX and DC: 4 Front-Face Fire Buttons - Gamecube and PS2: 2 x Analogue/C-Sticks. Okay, so there are certain attributes a controller has to have, but they could have used a bit of imagination! Oh, sorry they have... the 'Back' button...
This isn't Internet Explorer, boys... you're havin' a laugh!
There ARE a few titles that will appeal to the older generation of gamers who were brought up on the NES, SNES and N64, but not that many.
Sony with the PS2 seem to be going the same way, but not as targetted, they are managing to retain a lot of the PSX and PSOne users by providing a large number of 18+ titles, thereby keeping it's customer base fairly stable. The addition of the DVD player is DIRECTLY targetting the 20+ bracket, the film collectors, the high disposable income groups.
X-Box, to me, seems to be targetting ME. It has new games that haven't been seen before in great quantity, it has an advanced graphical style, it has power and potential, but seemingly moreso than the PS2 and the Gamecube. It's not JUST a games console, although they try to market it that way. It has DVD, it has the highly advanced broadband connection, it has the HardDrive, it's not the sort of kit you'd expect a 12 year old to get to grips with easily. It therefore seems to me to be aimed at the 20+ group, and from the titles listed so far, there's a large proportion of 'R' rated games in there.
Therefore, the X-Box will threaten the PS2's market more than the Gamecube's, and I think Nintendo realise this and are happy and I think that Sony realise this and are slightly worried. Having said that, the gaming market is these days huge, and there 'should' be room for both of the adult orientated consoles to exist together.
