Well, Nintendo came out with some new ideas, a different style for Zelda, a new Mario game that doesn't quite resemble other previous ones, even a different shaped box! They made sure that only the top quality titles would be available at launch, even going so far as to launch with less of their own games (although more third party software will be available at launch as well)
Did everyone give them a chance? Nope, the derision and insults came thick and fast, "why the stupid design?", "argh! You've altered Zelda!", "Nintendo are daring to be different, lynch them." Well, sorry, but it seems to me that Nintendo have made all the right decisions. Sony and Microsoft have stayed with what they see as a stable set of ideals, and that's fine for the type of people they are aiming at, the general market and stable people who don't want change.
Of course, this is only my own humble opinion, and many may still disagree, but this is the way I feel. Give them a break and sit back to await the launch. Nintendo add a different mix to the games industry at present, this is A GOOD THING.
Thank you!
No really, everything Meka says here and there about Nintendo are literally what I think about them. So I agree with Meka in every way. Nintendo are trying, and achieving, dominance in the originality departement. They are pulling out all the stops and creating games that will not only appeal to the older audience, but games that will be new and interesting in order to attract customers. They certainly managed to attract me I can tell you! I just have to hear the name 'Gamecube' and my mouth automatically turns on the drool mode.
Look at the design! Good old Ninty are even trying new-looks for consoles. No-one to my knowledge has ever created an actual cube for a console, have they? NO! (Don't anyone mention the fact that it doesn't actually measure out to be a perfect cube - NO ONE!) ;D
I have had both Sony consoles, but I may be prepared to handover all of my loyalty to Nintendo after their forthcoming extravaganda. Nintendo will revolutionise the industry (hopefully) with yet another one of their genius ideas - the mini discs.
Thank you Nintendo. Thank you Shigeru Myamoto.
Shocktrooper - too tired to write anymore.
I don't really give too hoots whether it appeals to same kid in Nevada, or a crazy old man in Tokyo, it has games that make me smile.
Hopefully playing them will also make me smile.
It's funny though, we criticise a lack of originality, and we criticise something different.
Luigis Mansion appeals to me because it's different, Pikmin appeals to me because it's different, SuperMonkeyBall appeals to me because it's different.
But hey, if you're not a big fan of change then that's fine too, because there's still Wave Race, and Super Smash Bros and Rogue Leader - just like te games you used to play, only they look better, and gameplay has been 'tweaked'. It might not be new, but it's still fun!
If Nintendo can appeal to some more mature gamers with the likes of Eternal Darkness, Rune, Metroid and Too Human other third party developers will follow suit, and make the GAMECUBE a platform with an equal amount of so called adult titles as it's competitors. Not that it would bother ME a great deal if it didn't, i enjoy the kind of games Nintendo produce, but having the CHOICE wouldn't be a bad thing.
I have to say that honestly, the XBox just doesn't appeal to me. The games may look all very pretty, and you may be able to do all sorts of things on them, but they just haven't grabbed me by the balls, and screamed "FUN" in my ears! To me they feel cold, but hey, it's just not my bag - it doesn't mean you can't buy it and love it, if that's your thing.
The PS2 just doesn't have enough titles to draw me to it either. Yes there are one or two that interest me, but again it still seems to be about 'an impressive gaming experience' rather than fun!
I guess different people want different things from their games, some like to play in a gritty world, fighting against the odds, and yes, sometimes that can be fun, but more often than not I want games to bring a smile to my face, to make me laugh, to make me think every now and then, but always keep going, and feel I'm getting somewhere.
So I'll stick with what I know for now. They say the grass is always greener on the other side, but I've had a peep, and the grass may well me greener, but it seems somehow lacking. For now.
10% Complete and people are moaning....It is Highley Likely that the new Zelda will be the best game of all time!
Sony and Microsoft seem to neglect the lower ratings side of the market.
Games rated E are either sports games, or cartoony games which don't just LOOK like they've been made for 5 year olds, the PLAY like they're for 5 year olds.
There are one or two exceptions but not many.
Nintendo have full quality in the full range.
You have games like Mario Party at the EC range but even fully grown men (like Meka) can enjoy them.
They might not have depth but they're still playable and fun.
Then there's games like Mario and Zelda with an E.
These are as challenging and playable as all but the most hardcore adult games.
While at the same time they're also easy enough for children to get into.
There's the teen range. Most beat em ups come under this.
This is where games like Goldeneye and Smash Brothers go.
Mildly violent but nothing serios.
Again, they're easy to start with but still offer a serious challenge.
Finally, the 18+ range.
As well as a billion ports from the PS2 and Xbox Nintendo (along with their second party companies) have produced Eternal Darkness - a survival horror and games like Perfect Dark and Metroid - violent first person shooters.
You get the whole bundle.
A healthy diet of gaming.
You can find those 18+ games on any system.
Nintendo is the only company to strike a true balance.
Over 17's.
Why?
One year and they're an adult anyway. What's the point? Surely 15/16 would be a little more sensible?
I mean those Black and
> White buttons above-right of the A-B-X-Y Buttons are a joke, they
> clash like mad, they're our of place and they're probably a waste of
> space for the amount of time the gamers use them.
From now on, I shall call you Lawrence Lleyelen Bowen (sp?).
Do you have a velvet coat with large cuffs by any chance?
