"How old are you?"
"14"
"Oh, forget it then.."
Sigh...
Ever thought of doing a piece like that professionally for PC Gamer?
Ok, i8, for the uninitiated, was the latest of the i-series LAN parties, held every few months. It's the biggest LAN in Britain, and attracts hundreds of visitors, with their PCs, to launch in to a few days multiplayer gaming. It acts as a qualifiers for various game specific european/worldwide tournaments (Quake III and Counter-Strike this year, I think), and gives some bedroom programmers the chance to distribute their games out to large numbers of people via the FTP server.
The gaming is all suitably low ping, no real evident lag, and the network is set up well to accomdate for the sudden influx of 840 people. There were very few problems with the administration, the only noticeable exception being the Tribes 2 setup, where players in one part of the building couldnt connect with those in another...that should be sorted at i9 with better implementation of Vlans.
Counter-Strike was easily the biggest game, and is set to be at i9 too - it was the only tournament our clan entered, and we scraped second place in our group. However, some last minute rule changes meant only 4 runners up went through, and these 4 clans were to be decided with a beer drinking contest...We breezed that, but after some complaints that it wasn't fair (bah...), we actually had to play to get a place. Cue our embaressing 40 - 0 defeat on de_aztec, and [DOPEy] hiding from everyone else to avoid ridicule..
The event as a whole is not to be taken seriously, as some of the images prove...it's a bit of a laugh for like-minded people, very little vandalism or theft occurs because most people are there for the same reason - play games, have a laugh, and get absolutely off their faces when the bar opens.
I'd encourage as many of you to attend i9 as possible... held at Newbury racecourse conferance centre again, 16th - 18th November, £60 for the 3 days. Have to take your PC/monitor, and a 4-way power adapter, but they install the network. Quick warning - bring your own food/drink! There's a 24-hour Tescos just down the road, and while you're not allowed to bring alcohol in to the event, try to buy as much else outside as you can. Prices are through the roof - £10 for 2 medium pizzas, £2.70 for a 33cl bottle of beer, £2.40 for coke..
More information at www.multiplay.co.uk, and see some i8 images at http://www.multiplay.co.uk/coverage/i8/. Beware of entering the 0wnage tourney at i9 though - anyone who doesn't 0wn goes the same way as [CTM]Cannon (http://www.multiplay.co.uk/coverage/i8/pictures/DSC00159.JPG)

Yeah, yeah, that's what Tim Henman says everytime he loses a game 0-40 as well....
