Allright, I need a new printer, I have about £80. I have an idea but I'd like your opinions.

HP or Epson?

I have the choice of a HP930C or a Stylus 880.

If you could tell me which is better in your opinion and a reason I'd be really grateful.

OK, epson reliability. Epsons were notoriously unreliable when they started makeing ink-jets. They have recently improved this record. As for constant print head cleaning, my 850 does it all the time but my parents 760 doesent. The 760 is the printer that I would recommend.

I have an Epson Stylus Photo - the first 6-colour inkjet they did. Print quality is (or rather was) outstanding, but I get sick of the number of times the stupid thing wants to clean its print heads. And now its started leaving lines down the side of the paper.

In contrast I've used an HP DeskJet 850C at work for *years* and only the second set of cartridges I've ever put in it have just run out.

Sorry, Epson, but I'd recommend HP.

Chris.

I had an Epson Stylus Photo 750 and it was too fast for its own good - it kept shredding the belts that move the print head.

However, I now have an Epson Stylus Photo 870 - it's a bit slower, but it's also quieter, and the print quality is excellent.

Oh bloody hell, that's knackered that decision then hasn't it. I'm not so sure now!

In my experience, Epson's are very unreliable (and the number of them we have to repair at the computer shop I work at proves this).
My mum has a HP 930C and the quality is stunning, as is the speed. Also, she's never had a problem with it since her purchase 6 months ago (ie. reliable).
If I had to make the decision, I'd go for HP any day (I love my 840C, purchased from SR). However, it's your money so it's your call. :)

OK, I have had a load of problems with HP printers (mainly the 690's) including one trying to push the cartidge holder through the side of the case. As for Epson's the only problems are with the 740. I have an 850 and it is brilliant and my parents new 760 prints photos very quickly compared to how long it used to take. I would say Epson. Also on cartridges I'm not sure if this is still the case but HP used to always include a head on each cart and so they cost more money.

I think they disabled it as the string comparisons were too large, especially for posts of Dan2K1 proportions.
