But this summer there have been more titles available and more new hardware releases to tempt us back from the brink of that foaming sea to our dark little gaming rooms and jump for joy. Nintendo released their Gameboy Advance, hoping to catch all those gamers that didn’t want to be away from their home consoles while they were away from their homes and Sony tried to add a little more spice to their slowly increasing games line-up by tempting both old and new gamers with GT3. It’s been a better summer overall than many before it, so cheer up. Yes, exams have played a big part for a lot of you, but It’s now time to pick up those consoles and dance to the rhythm of gaming once more my friends.
The main reason why games companies choose to concentrate their efforts on the winter is twofold. Firstly, there is Christmas, and what a big money-spinner it is! Parents can be persuaded to help with the acquisition of many a console or game at this time of year and licences sell like hot mince pies during the festive season. Games companies look forward to that time of year in the same way that sharks look forward to seeing a dangling pair of legs in the water above them. The second part of this wonderful plan is that Children are at home for the holidays, and due to the weather and early evenings they tend to stay indoors. This means that adverts and licences based on children’s TV have more of an impact at Christmas time, plus they will be playing games with their friends again, meaning their interest in gaming becomes more active. There is something about Christmas that just calls out to gaming and it’s a great way to spend the time while the rest of the family slumps in front of another re-run of Sound of Music, while the only music you will be listening to is the crunch of bullets or the frazzle of a laser-beam hitting its target.
But there is no need to forsake the great games playing days of winter in the hotter months. While others try to bake their skin and soak up as many harmful rays as possible, why not go for the ultimate sun protection and stay indoors instead? Catch up on all those games you missed the first time around, or simply play some of the ones that have been stuck in the cupboard for ages without being played. Can’t avoid the outside world? Take your GB or GBA with you and enjoy the world of gaming on the move then.
The sun, being a virtual stranger to this country, may shine from time to time, but that’s no reason to go outside, stay and join the gaming population, on the net, on the couch or on your own, multiplayer or single player, fast and furious or thoughtful, gaming is a way of life, don’t lose it!
well, you did ask! ;-)
